Overview A Registered Dietician (RD) is a healthcare professional who specializes in the science of nutrition and dietetics. They provide medical nutrition therapy to individuals and groups, and work to promote health and prevent and treat diseases through the use of food and nutrition. Detailed Job Description Registered Dieticians are responsible for providing nutrition care to individuals and groups. They assess the nutritional needs of their clients and develop individualized nutrition plans to meet those needs. They also provide nutrition education and counseling, and work to promote healthy eating habits and lifestyles. They may also work in research, public health, or food service management. Job Skills Required Registered Dieticians must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as strong problem-solving and organizational skills. They must also have a thorough understanding of nutrition science and be able to apply it to individual and group needs. Job Qualifications Registered Dieticians must have a bachelor's degree in dietetics, nutrition, food science, or a related field. They must also complete an accredited dietetic internship and pass the national registration examination. Job Knowledge Registered Dieticians must have a thorough knowledge of nutrition science, including the principles of nutrition, food composition, and nutrition assessment. They must also be familiar with the latest research and trends in nutrition and dietetics. Job Experience Registered Dieticians must have at least one year of supervised practice experience in a healthcare setting. They must also have experience in providing nutrition counseling and education. Job Responsibilities Registered Dieticians are responsible for assessing the nutritional needs of their clients and developing individualized nutrition plans to meet those needs. They must also provide nutrition counseling and education, and work to promote healthy eating habits and lifestyles. They may also be responsible for managing food service operations, conducting research, or providing public health nutrition services.
