Overview A COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant) is a health care professional who works under the supervision of an occupational therapist to provide rehabilitative services to individuals with physical, mental, emotional, or developmental disabilities. They help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. Detailed Job Description A COTA works with patients to develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. They assess patients’ needs, develop treatment plans, and provide therapeutic activities to help patients reach their goals. COTAs also provide patient and family education, monitor patient progress, and document patient care. They may also assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, ordering supplies, and maintaining patient records. Job Skills Required• Knowledge of occupational therapy principles and practices
• Ability to assess patient needs and develop treatment plans
• Ability to provide therapeutic activities to help patients reach their goals
• Ability to provide patient and family education
• Ability to monitor patient progress and document patient care
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and other health care professionals
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
Job Qualifications
• Associate’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program
• Current certification as a COTA from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
• State licensure as a COTA
Job Knowledge
• Knowledge of occupational therapy principles and practices
• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
• Knowledge of medical terminology
• Knowledge of therapeutic activities
• Knowledge of patient assessment techniques
• Knowledge of patient education techniques
• Knowledge of documentation and record keeping
Job Experience
• Previous experience working as a COTA in a clinical setting
• Previous experience working with patients with physical, mental, emotional, or developmental disabilities
Job Responsibilities
• Assess patient needs and develop treatment plans
• Provide therapeutic activities to help patients reach their goals
• Provide patient and family education
• Monitor patient progress and document patient care
