Accurately tests visual acuity at distance and near, with and without correction or with and without a pinhole.

Learning to provide direct administrative support for and acquiring specialized knowledge of different ophthalmology sub-specialties and patient diagnoses classes.

Gaining experience working on a cross-functional team in a fast paced and dynamic clinical healthcare environment.

Training in our EMR systems including Epic, Power chart and unique ophthalmology programs.

Supporting the conversion of patient and departmental records into Electronic Medical Records (EMR) as well as other process efficiency improvement initiatives.

Completing individualized, self-driven projects working both independently and in collaboration with clinicians and administrators based on intern’s interests.

Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Healthcare administration majors/minors preferred

HCW has a working knowledge of ocular terminology and basic medical terminology.

Instruct patients concerning eye care and contact lens handling.

Prepares patients and performs as surgical assistant in all types of ophthalmic surgery and/or minor surgical procedures as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The following KSAs are expected at the GS-9 Advanced Technician assignment.

Knowledge of advanced clinical optics, advanced ocular motility, advanced diagnostic testing, and microbiology testing.

Knowledge of ophthalmic surgical instruments.

Knowledge of appropriate preparatory cleaning of reusable medical equipment.

Three (3) months related work experience in an Ophthamalic practice

Responsible for the ordering, receiving, & inventorying of contact lenses & contact lens supplies

Notifies patients via telephone of contact lens orders & pick up status

Makes contact lens appointments as required

Performs routine cleaning of contact lenses & trial fitting sets

High school education or GED is required.

No experience required. Some experience as a Medical Assistant, Optometry, or Ophthalmology setting is preferred.

Must attain JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) within 1 year of employment.

2. Tests (measures and records) basic ocular function.

3. Assists ophthalmologist with surgical procedures.

Possess strong organizational and time management skills.

Skills conducting medical investigations by biochemical, molecular, and cellular experiments.

Knowledge of and proficiency using Microsoft Office, particularly Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Photoshop, Prism, etc.

Skills on proper handling of laboratory mouse and rats and conducting experiments of vision, diabetes, and neurodegenerative animal models.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to work independently and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively as part of a team.

Performs ocular examinations, including: history taking, acuity, ocular motility, alignment and intraocular pressure assessment, lensometry and refraction. (20%)

Performs visual field testing, OCT, pachymetry, topography, biometry and ocular photography. (20%)

Determines need/urgency of care based on patient information, medical record and presenting signs/symptoms. (20%)

Provides post-operative instructions to patients. (20%)

Provides explanations regarding prescriptions for medications and glasses to patients. (20%)

High School Diploma or GED Required

Computer skills, work experience with Electronic Medical Record preferred.

One year work experience, preferably in eye-related field.

Previous work experience in ophthalmology preferred.

Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO) in Ophthalmology at the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) level.

CPR certification (American Heart Association) required.

Requirement: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant – Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology

2-5 Years of experience in a busy Ophthalmology office.

Carries out orders in the delivery of patient care as assigned by the Office Manager or physician.

Completion of competency based orientation

Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider—required.

Education: High school diploma/GED, with appropriate training in this field.

Experience: 0-1 year minimum as Ophthalmic Tech/Medical Office Assistant or equivalent

Good communication skills with patients and staff to provide information

Knowledge of proper use and care of ophthalmic equipment and instruments

Records relevant medical information for the provider (i.e., assessments, plans, interventions, and spectacles) completes forms and other necessary data entry.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Must have knowledge of medical and ophthalmological terminology.

Good verbal and written communication skills, including legible handwriting.

Knowledge of computer and computer keyboard.

Maintains and cleans equipment, reports equipment deficiencies to management.

Two years of related experience (equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).

Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification.

Zero (0) to two (2) years of experience in a relevant role.
