Youth Librarian
Location: Rudisill Regional Library - 1520 N. Hartford Tulsa, OK. 74106
Salary: $3789.07 / month
Status: Full Time
Schedule:
Monday 12 pm - 9 pm
Tuesday 9 am - 6pm
Wednesday 8 am - 5 pm
Thursday 9 am - 6 pm
Alternating Friday/Saturday 8 am - 5 pm
Approximately one Sunday per month 12:30 pm - 5 pm
The Tulsa City-County Library (TCCL) has an exciting opening for a full time Youth Librarian at the Rudisill Regional Library. The Youth Librarian assists the system’s youngest customers and their parents, helping to find materials for the appropriate age level of the child; maintains youth collection; organizes and implements programs, storytimes and Summer Reading Program. Creates an excellent customer experience for each and every visitor to the library by ensuring they successfully connect to the information and resources they want and need.
Essential Functions
  • Responsible for collection development for location's youth collection;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Serves as outreach contact to schools, childcare groups and other organizations to promote library events;
  • Represents and promotes the library to the community, as well as to professional and educational institutions;
  • Develops and maintains story hour resources as well as assists with the training of new employees in youth programming and story time procedures and techniques;
  • Implements innovative and experimental programming for children and teens, in addition to routine programs for adults;
  • Serves as extension resource person for others responsible for youth programming;
  • Provides assistance at public service desk in the location and use of library resources; responds to customers' questions, conducting research and providing answers to reference questions;
  • Plans and implements the location’s participation in system-wide special programs such as the Summer Reading Program. Serves as permanent member of planning committee for the Summer Reading Program;
  • Recommends new youth materials for system-wide purchase;
Qualifications
  • Ability to navigate and perform tasks on a variety of technical software, including audiovisual equipment, smart phones, mobile devices, computer hardware and software, and new databases and consumer devices such as (and not limited to) e-readers, tablets and personal computers;
  • Identifies the needs of customers and staff and connects users to appropriate resources and services in a timely manner;
  • Advanced knowledge of children’s, tween and teen collections and programming and thorough knowledge of reference practices and procedures;
  • Leadership skills, good judgement, and the ability to make staffing and building decisions when designated at the Person in Charge (PIC);
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Actively supports TCCL’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion efforts, and the Library’s Be All In culture.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented and collaborative environment as well as the ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and teams, including community partners and library co-workers;
Education and Experience:
  • Good knowledge of children’s literature required.
  • Six months or more experience in a library setting required.
  • Or equivalent combination of technical training, education, and/or experience.
  • Collection development experience preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Library Science or substantial progress towards MLIS or equivalent degree in related field required.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work occasionally requires stooping or bending and interacting with small children. Occasional light lifting, such as three or four reams of paper, four or five books, or other materials (up to 20 pounds) may be required. Work environment involves no major sources of discomfort; work is essentially conducted in a normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions.
