Job Description
Based in Cherryfield, the Mission’s youth development programs, collectively known as EdGE, engage more than 800 children and their families in collaborative and innovative afterschool, summer, and in-school programs.


The Youth Development Coordinator supports initiatives that leverage experiential, leadership, mentoring, and outdoor programs to build aspirations and resilience in children. This position primarily supports programs for elementary-school-aged children that take place in school, after school, and at summer day camps. The position has a particular focus on programs using Cherryfield campus facilities, especially the ropes course.


Responsibilities


  • Be a positive role model and mentor to EdGE youth
  • Collaborate across EdGE Primary programs to plan, deliver, and lead developmentally appropriate activities for students, families, and community partners targeted to elementary-school-aged children. Programming includes low and high ropes course activities and other experiential activities
  • Collect and record data on attendance and activities; assist with program evaluation tools
  • Attend team meetings
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in a manner consistent with the highest safety standards; use excellent judgement
  • Build grit, resilience, and aspiration for post-secondary learning through experiential experiences and workshops
  • Collaborate with Mission Downeast programs to increase mentoring opportunities
  • As needed, support Secondary and Post-Secondary EdGE programs, including ropes course and other experiential activities, as well as some overnight excursions

Qualifications


Required


  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills
  • A flexible schedule and being available to work outside regular working hours, including some evenings and weekends
  • Desire to make a positive impact on youth and families’ lives; be caring, compassionate, creative, and have a sense of humor
  • Understanding of child development and education theories/practice
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment
  • Either ropes or challenge course training or experience, or the ability and willingness to be trained
  • Ability to motivate students and colleagues, work as part of a team, and relate to children at various life stages, both in groups and individually
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as to cooperate with a team
  • Commitment to maintaining a positive and safe environment for students and fellow workers
  • Experience teaching or working with young people


Desirable


  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Maine Guide license
  • Kayaking, biking, hiking experience


Special Position Requirements


  • Some overnight trips and evening and weekend activities, occasionally sleeping outdoors
  • Drive 12 to 15-passenger van


Physical Requirements Of The Position


  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to communicate verbally and visually to maintain safe conditions
  • Physical ability and stamina for outdoor excursions and overnight camping trips


Compensation


$43,500 with excellent benefits
