Merced College is a midsized community college located in California’s Central Valley. General Description: This is a full-time, tenure track instructional assignment in the Athletics Department at Merced College under the general direction of the Associate Dean of Athletics and Kinesiology. The coach/professor will be assigned in an area/discipline of the candidate’s qualifications based on the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Minimum Qualifications. The standard faculty load is 15 units per semester, which may include evening hours and/or weekend assignments.

Examples of Duties

  • Provide referrals to prospective student-athletes to academic and student services as appropriate
  • Assist with the recruiting process in compliance with CCCAA regulations to identify and attract promising student-athletes
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Ensure program compliance within the subject sports program with CCCAA regulations; establish and monitor effective procedures to ensure staff and student-athletes comply with such requirements; communicate the disciplinary or corrective consequences of violations as set forth in the provisions of enforcement procedures; report violations of regulations to the appropriate administrator
  • Create a positive atmosphere for the student-athletes; support academic progress, retention, and matriculation of student-athletes through mentoring activities; refer student-athletes to support services, programs, resources, and other professionals as appropriate; maintain confidential student-athlete information
  • Assist in planning and scheduling competitions, tournaments, and events in collaboration with coaches within and outside of the conference and in concert with academic schedules, District policy, and California Community College Commission on Athletics (CCCAA)/conference regulations
  • Perform tasks needed for student records, e.g., submit grades on time to admissions and records
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Evaluate individual and team performance and refine individual and team strategies throughout the season
  • Provide instruction, mentoring, and coaching to student athletes in the skills, techniques, and competitive strategies necessary for individual and team achievement of athletic standards of performance
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policy
  • Participate in departmental, area and campus professional activities/committees
  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments
  • Maintain required student attendance and scholastic records
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Establish and maintain safety standards to protect student-athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must meet both coaching and discipline minimum qualifications as described below:

Required for assignment to a discipline:
Disciplines requiring a master's degree
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college student
  • The equivalent education or experience*
  • Master’s degree in assigned discipline from an accredited institution OR
Disciplines not requiring a master's degree
  • Associate degree(s) and six years of professional experience; the professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member’s teaching assignment; professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master’s degree OR
  • Bachelor’s degree(s) or higher and two years of professional experience, OR
  • The equivalent education or experience*
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
Required for coaching assignment:
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
  • Any associate degree and six years of professional experience in the field OR
  • The equivalent*
  • Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience in the field (Basketball) OR

Cost is $12.00/month for 10 months/year. We do not pay anything during June and July. This $12.00 covers the following as long as the members use Plan providers:
