Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is currently designated as an AANAPISI (Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution). The Wellness Coordinator will work to bring wellness programming and initiatives to students served by a recently funded AANAPISI grant project which is funded by the Department of Education.

The person in this position will plan and implement wellness programs and initiatives in addition to working closely with campus partners to bring a breadth of services which meet students where they are. The grant project primarily serves APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) and Indigenous populations, aiding in student retention. The position is housed within the Cultural and Community Centers which reports to the Office of Inclusion and Diversity. The individual in this role will report to the Director of the APIDA+ Center but will engage and interact with various Cultural and Community Centers team members, diverse student populations, and campus partners.


Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills. Detail oriented person with demonstrated ability to multitask, tracking and completing varied tasks effectively over an extended period of time.
  • Strong computer skills in electronic file management, word processing, budget tracking, and spreadsheets.
  • Experience learning and working in a dynamic environment individually and as a part of a team.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with a diverse population, with sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences, including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and prospective students and their families.
  • Proficient knowledge of student retention factors, student development theories, and pillars of holistic wellness.
  • Bachelor’s degree in health education, nursing, community health, or a health related field, such as exercise physiology, nutrition, psychology, social work, Asian American Studies, Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, etc. is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a highly professional manner with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students. They will be detail oriented and possess proficient knowledge related to the multiple dimensions of wellness (physical, emotional, intellectual, financial, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Several years of experience working in a health promotions program, community health, wellness program, or public health education program.
  • Experience with program planning and implementation within the higher education setting is preferred.
  • Broad cultural competency related to APIDA and/or Indigenous populations. Understanding contemporary issues facing APIDA and/or Indigenous populations as well as their experiences within the higher education setting.
  • Experience with programmatic assessment.
  • Experience working in a college/student facing setting is preferred.
