Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of library work experience, or A combination of related work experience, undergraduate education, and/or post-high school library training totaling four years.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience in providing quality customer service and resolving customer concerns. Public service preferred.
Experience in communicating and administering organizational policies, especially in the areas of safety and building use.
Experience with Microsoft Office suite, similar tools, and the ability to learn anduse new technologies.
Previous functional supervision.

:

Iowa State University Library is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time (40 hours per week) Library Assistant III. As a member of the Access Services team at ISU Library, this person provides circulation and reference services to the ISU community and is responsible for providing a safe environment within the library. They train and functionally oversee student employee daily tasks, and provide excellent customer service at our main service point and throughout the building. The Library Assistant III serves as the primary supervisor on

duty during evening and/or weekend library hours. This position is responsible for the opening and/or closing duties of Parks Library and conducting safety rounds throughout the building.

The successful candidate can both work independently and function well within a team, provide excellent customer service in a variety of situations, multi-task with frequent interruptions, resolve problems in a timely manner, and readily respond to changing circumstances.

Work schedule during the regular academic semesters:

Saturday: 9:30am – 8:30pm

Sunday: 9:30am – 8:30pm

Monday: 9:30am – 8:30pm

Tuesday: 9:30am – 8:30pm

During the following time periods, scheduled work days and times will be adjusted to reflect changes in library hours of operation and weekend closures:

  • Winter Break
  • University Holidays
  • Summer
  • Spring Break
  • Finals Week
  • Thanksgiving Break

Major Duties

• providing excellent customer service
• serving as the primary supervisor on duty during evening and/or weekend library hours
• being responsible for the opening and closing duties of Parks Library, as well as general supervision of library services during the weekend hours
• providing circulation and reference services to the ISU community
• providing safe environment within the library
• training and functionally overseeing student employee daily tasks

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
• Performs public service and/or technical processing duties that involve in depth knowledge of unit, library and university policies/procedures.
• Applies basic knowledge of consortium and national policies, procedures, rules, standards, and codes.
• Applies broad - based, in - depth knowledge of the library’s automated system modules in such activities as searching for complex records, creating records, and problem resolution.
• Applies in - depth knowledge of software packages such as print a nd electronic document processing, spreadsheets, or specialized applications used by the unit.
• Assists library users with service and information of high complexity involving problem resolution and/or a limited degree of user instruction.
• Has contact w ith other university offices and outside agencies such as libraries and vendors on matters involving problem resolution.
• Recommends unit policies and priorities; develops unit procedures.
• Fully supervises no more than 20 (6.5 FTE) student employees and /or provides functional supervision of a limited number of merit staff.
• Manages a large unit.
• Performs duties with the authority to make exceptions; higher - level staff is normally available to whom difficult problems may be referred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of unit’s routines, functions, policies, procedures, and forms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and library users, orally and in writing, including the ability to draft procedures, policy recommendations, and user education materials.
  • Knowledge of library, academic, and bibliographic vocabulary.
  • Skill in utilizing a computer, software, online systems, and conventional office equipment.
  • Ability to respond to a variety of queries from library users, staff, and outside agencies requiring judgment and interpretation of unit and institutional policies.
  • Ability to accurately follow and interpret oral and written instruction and exercise judgment in its application.
  • Ability to organize workflow and prioritize multiple tasks for self and others.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the principles of supervision.
