The Minnesota State Law Library is pleased to announce an opening for a Library Assistant. This is a permanent part time position working approximately 15 hours per week, performing clerical library work. Work involves performing a wide range of library tasks that support the mission of the library. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Library Division Supervisor.

Example of Duties

What you will do:
The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform.

  • Use scanners to digitize books, papers, and microfiche.
  • Oversee overdue materials including checking the shelves for materials and following-up with patrons who have overdue materials.
  • Perform database maintenance.
  • Update library materials with pocket parts.
  • Other projects as needed.
  • Review and redact briefs for uploading to the library’s online brief archive.
  • Shelve library materials; shelf read to maintain correct order of materials.

Typical Qualifications

Below are the past experiences that will enable success in the role. For education requirements listed, the equivalent number of years of related experience may serve as a substitute.
What you must have:

  • Graduation from high school, or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years of clerical or library experience.
What you will bring:
  • Ability to lift and move boxes up to 30 lbs.
  • Self-motivation and detail-orientation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to read and understand English.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects effectively and efficiently.
Nice to have:
  • Current enrollment in a library-related degree.
  • Experience working in a library.

What you will earn:
The expected starting salary range for external candidates is $18.55-$22.24 per hour. The full salary range for this position is $18.55-$26.92 per hour. This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for applicable part-time employee benefits.

Supplemental Information

Position Logistics:

  • Specific work hours will be determined when a job offer is extended for this position.
  • This position is classified as a Library Assistant II.
  • This position will work approximately 15 hours per week during normal business hours, Monday-Friday. Work will be performed on-site in the Minnesota State Library at the Minnesota Judicial Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
