Job Description
The Library Assistant IV provides support for many functions of the library, including serving as Building Coordinator, serving as administrative supervisor for student employees, and supporting library services, such as educational offerings and room reservations. They also provide circulation and reference service to users at the Service Desk. This position is instrumental in supporting Hardin’s work in providing health sciences students, faculty, staff, and residents with spaces and services to promote study, research, and clinical care.


Work hours are 8 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday. This position is 100% on campus.


General Performance Expectations


The individual in this position is expected to meet reasonable standards of work quality and quantity, as well as expectations for attendance established by their supervisor. Staff members are also expected to comply with policies governing employee responsibilities and conduct, including those contained in the University Operations Manual.


Position Responsibilities


  • Works at the Service Desk, providing excellent reference and customer service in-person, via phone, email, and online chat. Maintains Service Desk schedule; locates substitutes to cover for staff absences. Provides functional student supervision while staffing the Service Desk. Participates in other desk duties as assigned.
  • Collects and organizes data for Hardin Library on space usage and user services, supplying needed information for the creation of reports, both internal and external.
  • Serves as Building Coordinator for the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences (HLHS). Primary on-site contact for service & maintenance providers, custodial services, and telecommunications. Coordinates building issues with other departments housed at Hardin. Manages building’s electronic door system and physical keys, working with campus offices as needed to troubleshoot issues. Orders office supplies.
  • Administratively supervises student workers, including hiring, scheduling, time record management, and performance. Implements Iowa GROW and other development opportunities for student staff.
  • Maintains scheduling for library spaces. Manages and distributes requests for classes, systematic reviews, and other services to appropriate library staff. Handles registrations for Hardin Open Workshops and manages attendance and evaluation data. Plans and organizes Hardin events, such as speakers and Finals Weeks activities, with guidance and input from other Hardin staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Classification Eligibility Requirements


  • A combination of related work experience, undergraduate education, and/or post-high school library training totaling five years.
  • Four years of library work experience, or


Desired/Preferred Qualifications


  • Proven organizational skills and ability to handle shifting priorities and multiple tasks.
  • Experience working in an academic environment.
  • Familiarity with library databases or discovery tools, such as InfoHawk+ or PubMed.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and public service skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with others and in groups and/or team settings.
  • Experience with library software applications such as Ex Libris Alma, WordPress or SpringShare.
  • Knowledge of University and Libraries policies and procedures.
  • Experience with technological hardware (copier/scanner/printer) and software such as Microsoft Word/Excel.
