Reporting to our Chief Innovation & Strategy Officer, Ventures Investing serves as GEHA’s corporate venture group. We operate an established venture capital fund launched to accelerate corporate strategy with investments in companies reasonably connected to GEHA’s VEBA purposes.


As one of the largest medical and dental benefit providers in the country that exclusively serves Federal employees, annuitants, military retirees and their families, GEHA represents an attractive strategic investor.


We are seeking a highly motivated Managing Director (MD) to lead the entire venture capital lifecycle, including sourcing, and investing in leading startups as well as enabling partnership opportunities and piloting of solutions within GEHA.

Role & Responsibilities


The VP-MD will work in close collaboration with our Chief Innovation and Strategy Officer (CISO) to source, lead diligence, and complete investments that support our strategic focus consistent with GEHA’s Innovation Investment Policy.


Responsibilities Include


Market analysis Perform in-depth research to support new and existing investment items and focus areas producing written research/analysis, sector presentations, white papers and investment memos.


Executive engagement Regularly interface with the GEHA Fund Governance Council and C-level executives, presenting sector and deal analysis and offering points of-view on strategic opportunities relative to venturing activities. Engage with business colleagues and IT to understand strategic roadmaps and help synthesize GEHA investment themes and focus areas. Lead internal thought leadership activities in coverage areas by creating and disseminating synthesis of industry trends, organize meetings with GEHA management and startup roadshows.


Pipeline development Build a robust pipeline of leading startups that fit with strategic investment themes. Meet regularly with VCs and innovation partners and attend conferences to maintain a pulse on market developments. Contribute to external communications to demonstrate GEHA thought leadership.


Venture analysis Perform end-to-end due diligence activities and recommendations, including market analysis, modeling, due diligence, structuring, legal documentation, negotiations, and investment committee presentations alongside partners. Prepare all necessary documents for the Fund Governance Council and the Board for investment decisions and ongoing portfolio management.


Portfolio management Manage portfolio companies post-investment, including GEHA’s relationship with portfolio companies. Drive related pilot opportunities and accelerate adoption of key capabilities in collaboration with GEHA business sponsor and Digital Innovation leadership.


Reporting Provide regular updates on Fund’s strategic objectives, portfolio health, operations, and financial parameters with CISO to the Fund Governance Council, Board, and key stakeholders.


Team management Coordinate multiple workstreams across the extended Ventures Investment team, ensuring the highest quality output on deliverables. Mentor GEHA colleagues to build and strengthen GEHA’s market intelligence and innovation capability.


Internal operations Grow and maintain our internal tools and knowledge database (e.g. relationship management platform) and create standardized operational processes to enable the team’s growth.


Ethics and compliance Demonstrate high ethical and professional standards with all business contacts to maintain GEHA’s excellent reputation within the business community. Performs all Company business in accordance with all regulations and Company policies and procedures.


Experience


  • Strong relationship management, communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills at all levels within or outside the organization.
  • 10+ years of related work experience required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Outlook, and database applications
  • Ability to travel (may include overnight travel)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think analytically about businesses, strategic fit to GEHA, and drive projects with a focus on creating impact.
  • Demonstrated capability to network, create and maintain business relationships.
  • Successful track record of investing and adding value to portfolio companies.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business management or related field is required; MBA or other master’s degree preferred.
  • 6+ years of full-cycle venture investing experience with a corporate venture firm or in a corporate venture setting.
  • Strong knowledge and experience dealing with data, analytics, and technology.
  • Strong network and connectivity within the venture and healthcare entrepreneur ecosystem is required.


Work-at-home Requirements


  • Must have the ability to provide a non-cellular High Speed Internet Service such as Fiber, DSL, or cable Modems for a home office.
  • A dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information
  • Latency (ping) response time lower than 80 ms
  • Hotspots, satellite and wireless internet service is NOT allowed for this role.
  • A minimum standard speed for optimal performance of 30x5 (30mpbs download x 5mpbs upload) is required.

GEHA considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and business considerations when extending an offer.


The annual base salary range for this position is $192,800 - $289,200 USD.
