Job Description

Vehicle Driver III
Performs routine motor vehicle operations. Work involves operating a medium duty truck and trailer or a heavy-duty tractor truck and trailer to transport cargo between state owned facilities. In addition, position involves operating a truck or truck/trailer on the MSSLC campus as required. Works under general supervision of the Regional and Operations Laundry managers, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
This position normally works early morning hours Monday through Friday and may be required to work other hours, weekends and holidays as situation warrants. This position requires maintaining forms or records pertaining to vehicle operation. Completion of work requires use of established methods and/or techniques. Decisions are based on well-defined guidelines. The Vehicle Driver II has no financial responsibility but is accountable for assigned property. All tasks will be performed within established time frames.

Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
1. Properly operates a truck and trailer between state owned facilities to transport laundry products.
a. Be familiar with and operate the vehicle in accordance with Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot) rules and regulations.
b. Ability to obtain a commercial driver license (CDL) within 60 days of employment
2. Performs operator level vehicle and trailer preventative maintenance checks. Specific checks will be made before, during and after operations.
a. Check for proper fluid levels for crankcase oil, transmission and power steering fluid, and brake master cylinder fluid prior to each over-the road trip.
b. Check for proper tire pressure, including spare tire, on a daily basis.
c. Make all safety checks (windshield wipers, lights, etc.) prior to, during, and after operations.
d. Follow all driver checklist items and perform all operator PM service on schedule.
3. Account for and properly load, tie down and unload cargo. Laundry carts and trailer will not be damaged in any way due to a failure to properly load and tie down the cargo.
a. Count carts to be loaded and confirm that this number matches the Laundry Manager's paperwork.
b. Load the laundry carts using proper body mechanics.
c. Tie down carts properly to eliminate excessive movement during transport.
d. Account for and unload cargo at each destination point.
4. Clean trailer interior after unloading soiled laundry carts. The trailer must be cleaned properly based upon departmental standards/policy prior to loading clean items.
a. Clean the trailer walls, ceiling and floor with steam, or with water pressure and a strong, acceptable disinfectant.
b. Maintain a record of each cleaning, and file those reports with the Laundry Manager.
5. Process paperwork to fulfill departmental needs. Initiates, processes and completes paperwork according to local guidelines and without significant errors or time delays.
a. Complete all paperwork assigned by the Laundry Manager to include all reports concerning equipment operational status and load count.
6: Works in Region II Laundry as designed by Regional/Operations manager. Duties involve operation of the CBW & associated equipment. Also provides services to sort dirty laundry and build orders.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Ability to work with other departments to act on pickup and delivery complaints.
Ability to keep records.
Knowledge of infection control policies.
Ability to make efficient use of available space.
Ability to sort, fold and package laundry.
Ability to communicate verbally or in writing effectively.
Ability to train others.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Must possess valid Texas driver’s license. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Ability to obtain a CDL license within 60 days of employment.

Initial Selection Criteria:
Experience driving medium duty truck and trailer or large vehicles.

Males between the ages of 18 – 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to Random drug testing.
Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
