Job Description

Under general supervision, locates Georgetown Utility Systems (GUS) underground electric, water, wastewater lines (facilities) and fiber optic cables. Indicates the location of utility lines and cables by marking physical location and creating and updating specific maps and records.

  • Provides assistance with the city fiber optic network including installation, trouble shooting and maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Locates underground electric, water and wastewater lines (facilities) and fiber optic cable using specialized equipment and knowledge of the underground utility system grid; marks locations.
  • Operates OMS, SCADA, and radio systems and performs switching operations in the electrical system.
  • Assists with GPS of electric system so an accurate database can be maintained.
  • Receives requests, via fax, phone, and in person, from City employees, contractors, and representatives from external entities to locate water, wastewater, electric and cable lines.
  • Ensures that proper procedures and record keeping are followed for all location requests; downloads all GPS data consistent with organization requirements.
  • Provides backup to the System Control Center during emergency situations.
  • Complies with appropriate departmental safety rules and traffic regulations in performing work.
  • Uses hand tools such as shovels picks, and lid pullers to open vaults, valve boxes and sewer manholes.
  • Assists Utility Billing with location of buried or hidden water meters.
  • Checks and maintains equipment, vehicles and tools for proper operation and clean and performs maintenance on equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, training and Experience Guidelines
High school diploma or equivalent. Three (3) years of full-time experience in a water, wastewater or electric environment or related experience. OR Any equivalent combination of related experience and education and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge of:
  • First aid and CPR.
  • GPS training with GEO-XT and Backpack units.
  • Computer programs used to create and update maps.
  • Rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the GUS and applicable State and Federal laws and regulations.
  • OHSA electrical safety procedures and practices.
  • Electrical theory and circuitry.
  • Components and operational characteristics of water, wastewater, electric and cable lines.
  • Operation of equipment used to locate utility lines.
Skill in:
  • Reading electrical hazard warnings on equipment and understanding directions.
  • Solving technical, safety, and construction problems related to work.
  • Operating heavy equipment safely.
  • Following electrical safety procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Utilizing computer software to complete work orders, GPS data sheets, download and enter data from Trimble System, etc.
  • Calculating depth, height, distance, voltages.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Valid Class C Texas driver’s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls.
Temperature and climatic extremes from weather; nonstandard work surfaces from walking to driving; energized electric lines; occasional dogs and insects.
Hiring Range: $21.26 to $26.63 hourly.
