About the role
Mangata Networks is looking for a State and Local Tax Manager who will be responsible for managing the US state and local tax reporting and compliance functions, as well as supporting the development and management of our state tax structuring. The position will be hands-on with reporting responsibilities.
The role would suit an experienced tax professional with commercial industry experience, who has the ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, and who embraces the opportunity to design procedures from the ground up. They will be technically minded, with a commercial outlook. The ideal candidate is resourceful in working through challenges, with the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and deliver results.

You will be responsible for

  • Supporting the implementation of, and managing the state and local tax engine technology strategy, including nexus settings, product mapping, and the development of automating processes, to include advancing better data analysis
  • Providing support on tax audits and any controversial matters that may arise in the area of tax compliance, as well as reviewing and responding to information requests issued by state taxing authorities
  • Supporting the year-end audit process. Preparing and reviewing quarterly and annual state tax provisions and accounting for uncertain positions, and ensuring compliance with our internal accounting controls. Ensuring that the state and local tax balance sheet positions are regularly reconciled
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships across functions within Mangata. Includes working collaboratively with the wider tax and finance team to facilitate tax return preparation and coordination
  • Participating in the development and implementation of state tax strategy, structure, and tax planning initiatives
  • Proactively managing and monitoring the complete, accurate, and timely filing of all state and local tax returns and payments, including preparation of state modifications and multistate allocation and apportionment. Managing tax notifications and tax registrations. Maintaining strong working relationships with, and managing external advisers
  • Establishing processes for quarterly state income estimated payments, forecasting state tax expense, and identifying potential effective tax rate impacts
  • Researching and analyzing the implications of multistate income tax law changes and developments, including state modifications to federal taxable income, filing methodologies, and income apportionment, and positions on technical matters involving excise, sales & use, and property taxes

Requirements for the role

  • A growth mindset, highly professional, with great communication skills
  • Ideally will have worked in a state tax and local tax role in the industry (a bonus if this is in communications)
  • Some travel may be required in this role
  • Attention to detail, without losing sight of the big picture
  • Excellent academics together with recognized tax and/or accounting qualifications, with an emphasis on tax
  • The base compensation for this role is $115,000- $155,000 USD annually. Please note that actual compensation offered is dependent upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, work location, education/ training, relevant skills, as well as, market and business considerations when extending an offer.
  • Commercially experienced and qualified corporate tax professional with significant relevant experience. Strong technical and analytical skills
  • Ability to multitask, manage multiple complex projects, and deliver on competing priorities in a timely manner
  • Independent self-starter who can effectively partner with colleagues across numerous functions. Ability to persuade and influence. Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Proficient knowledge of state direct and indirect tax matters, including how to determine nexus, reporting obligations, and correct tax rates under sales and use tax regimes, and manage excise and property tax compliance, planning opportunities, and administrative review
