Description
Reporting to the Director of Physical Plant, the University Fire & Life Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring a secure and safe atmosphere for the Hofstra community by enforcing all applicable Fire & Life Safety regulations through inspection and monitoring. Incumbent will also be responsible for coordinating and/or facilitating the relevant training and education across the campus community. Hofstra’s campus encompasses over 117 academic, administrative, and residential buildings, including 35 residence halls that accommodate 3,500 students. The incumbent will ensure the regular inspection of all fire safety related items for all campus areas, and coordinate periodic campus inspections with NY State, Nassau County, and local agencies.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Investigates and implements appropriate disciplinary action on violators of safety codes within the university.
  • Responsible to make notifications to OFPC, NCFM, NCDOT, NYSDOT, OSHA, or any department/agency to report emergency campus responses as required.
  • Responds to all campus fire related emergencies, and conducts emergency response team training on a regular basis.
  • Administers the Facilities and Operations department’s environmental, health, worker-safety training program, including safe storage, handling and disposal of chemicals and industrial waste.
  • Coordinates with other applicable university departments to address any form of campus violation of Fire Safety codes or OSHA regulations.
  • As a project team member, provides technical support to architects, engineers, and outside consultants on major capital construction projects involving fire and/or life safety systems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Develops evacuation plans for campus buildings, and works with Public Safety to coordinate annual emergency evacuation drills.
  • Develops and implements fire safety training for university students, employees and contractor workers.
  • Tracks and implements repairs, maintenance, inspections, and alarm resets to all building fire/safety systems, including; emergency building lighting, fire sprinklers, fire/CO alarm systems, fire extinguishers, and fire hydrants.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in fire operations, fire safety inspection, and/or industrial worker safety required.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to deal with varying constituencies, constructively with students, faculty, staff and senior level administrators.
  • NYSCEO Certification, and have an established record in the field of fire and life safety operations, code compliance, inspection and training.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA and Life Safety Codes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior fire safety work experience in an academic, research, or medical facility is highly desirable.
  • Prior firefighter or state certification as an inspector strongly preferred.
