Job Description

Join a team of track laborers with a record of building and repairing railroad tracks for Union Pacific over 150 years! As a Track Laborer - Regional, you'll perform the maintenance, repairs and installations critical to the tracks that run through your assigned territory. By repairing or replacing tracks as needed, you'll enable Union Pacific to move trains safely and efficiently to serve its customers throughout North America! Accountabilities

  • Handle, help unload and move track materials and equipment from rail cars, carts or trucks and dig holes and trenches
  • Perform railroad track maintenance, repair, installation, including operating heavy equipment
  • Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices and procedures
  • Remove and replace rails, rail anchors, spikes, ballast, ties and other parts as needed
  • Observe the condition of railroad tracks, track beds and track right-of-way for problems or defects
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Maintain track beds by cutting vegetation and brush when needed, and sweeping, picking and digging dust or snow from movable track parts
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle high-pressure situations
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)

Qualifications

Required
  • Candidates must qualify on a Physical Ability Test (PAT) prior to employment. Click here for a description of the Physical Abilities Test
  • Experience reading and understanding instructions (examples may include: operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents)
  • Candidates for this position must pass a pre-employment test in English before being allowed to interview. The number of candidates who pass the test and are granted an interview is based upon hiring needs.   • Valid driver's license
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
Preferred
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as construction, farm, etc. (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
  • Experience welding or a welding certificate (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
  • Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
  • Experience working in a construction-type setting (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
  • Experience of 1 year or more in Railroad Maintenance of Way work
  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or Class B

Physical Requirements

  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 65 lbs, and push and pull objects up to 119 lbs
  • Able to perform physically strenuous work on a continuous basis and occasionally bend, stoop and kneel. Must have manual dexterity with eye-hand coordination
  • Occasionally climb ladders to access truck storage and have the ability to frequently walk and maintain balance on a variety of surfaces
  • Able to remain standing for more than one-half of every work day with an opportunity to periodically change position for comfort

Work Conditions

  • Agree to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires
  • Work Conditions: Work takes place in many rural remote geographic areas.
  • To the extent required by federal law and/or collective bargaining agreement, membership to the respective labor union is required. The union agreement dictates the pay rate and cannot be individually negotiated. Monthly dues are the responsibility of the employee.
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Must be willing and able to work around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives and cranes
  • Able to provide your own transportation
  • Willing to work on-call, overtime, various shifts, 7 days a week, as well as weekends and holidays
