Job Description

Reports to: Teen Coordinator

Hourly Range: $15.00 per hour

Must be available Friday's 6-9:00pm

General Functions:

As a teen night youth leader, you will be responsible for the supervision and organization of areas/activities where participants are allowed. These areas may include the gymnasium, fitness center, family center and other pre-approved areas. If an area has not been approved, it must remain off-limits/restricted to participants. Staff must ensure that all participants follow the rules and expectations and are supported here at the Y. Staff will recognize positive behaviors while also holding participants accountable for any inappropriate, dangerous or reckless actions. All participants must follow the Teen Night Code of Conduct (COC) as well as any applicable Y policies; failing to do so must be addressed immediately in a professional and appropriate manner. Any conduct that is unsafe (including injuries/illnesses) or violations of Y policies must be reported to the Teen Coordinator or Lead Staff Member (LSM).

Qualifications:

Experience:

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age or older. A qualified candidate must have work or life experience that demonstrates leadership and accountability, a desire to work with and motivate children/young adults, and a personal commitment to the qualities of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Health and Capabilities:

Due to the nature of the program, qualified candidates must be of good health and emotional maturity; able to hear and see distress signals/noises and able to project their voice across a distance. The candidate must be able to perform basic tasks such as lifting/moving objects, running, jumping, throwing, as well as other specific mobility functions involving program-based activities.

Job Responsibilities:

Principle responsibilities as a Teen Night Youth Leader:

  • Provide supervision for participants throughout the Y and/or approved areas.
  • Notify the Teen Coordinator/LSM when: running late, schedule changes, no longer available to work.
  • When in doubt of what to do regarding any situation or activity, contact the LSM immediately.
  • Report to work on time and in a condition to fulfill job requirements.
  • Monitor participants behaviors and be ready to step-in if necessary, to address/resolve any issues.
  • Make sure all equipment is returned, trash is picked up, and all participants leave on-time.
  • Actively engage participants and staff.
  • Maintain safety standards for participants and report any serious and/or repeat violations to the LSM.
  • Always wear a Y name tag and Y shirt.
  • Assist in preparing the facility for activities.
  • Except for real emergencies, avoid distractions while working (including phone/device use).
  • Coordinate and communicate with the Teen Coordinator/LSM and staff.

This position directly impacts the development of participants at the YMCA by providing a safe and engaging environment for youth/teens to belong. As part of this team/staff, you will be supported and relied upon to fulfill the objectives of this program.
