Job Description

FLSA: Non-Exempt/Overtime Eligible

Hours Per Week: 4/Part-time

Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. We fight poverty through comprehensive social services and by treating each client with compassion, integrity, and respect. Our programs are staffed by experts who help over 305,000 clients each year and advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers. Our services include 100% affordable housing at 21 locations, family violence program, Holocaust survivor assistance, geriatric social work, crisis intervention, and the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 101 food pantries, affordable housing sites, and JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York City.

Position Summary:

The Tech Mentor at the Chesed Center will be responsible for mentoring clients of all backgrounds impacted by poverty on the operation of Windows PCs, MS Office, and other related computer software. The Tech Mentor will also be tasked with data entry and assisting clients with registering for programs and/or courses.

Principal Responsibilities:

While working directly with clients the Tech Mentor should be able to:

  • Assess client’s capacity to carry out mutually decided upon realistic tech goals.
  • Attend trainings and seminars regarding topics related to Boro Park Pathways work.
  • Recognize and adhere to professional roles and boundaries.
  • Obtain appropriate documentation when applicable.
  • Represent agency in meetings as needed.
  • Manage a caseload of clients.
  • Assess client needs/skills as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with Boro Park Pathways team and cover when staff is out, as needed.
  • Participate in individual supervision as needed.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required.
  • Provide information and referrals to clients regarding resources in the community when needed.
  • Conduct in-person and remote client registrations and input information into EMR.
  • Participate in community events and distributions as needed.
  • Conduct regular follow-ups with clients and collaterals to ensure appropriate and effective referrals.
  • Maintain ongoing contact log notes and related documentation.
  • Comply with demands of funding grant and assist in preparing grant reports.

  • Excellent computer literacy and word processing skills

Language Skills:

  • Fluent in Yiddish (Required)

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to function effectively within a crisis environment and make appropriate and safe decisions

Work Environment:

  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity especially to insular, immigrant, and minority groups
  • Must be able to work in a busy environment with a sensitive population

Special Requirements:

This position is based at a Brooklyn satellite office with occasional meetings/trainings at the main location in Manhattan. Participating in outdoor events in Brooklyn may be required on occasion.

Compensation: $23 - $25 per hour
