Position Overview
The Support Service Worker is at our Manteno Veterans’ Home serving within the Dietary Department. This position serves under the direction of the Dietary Manager I. Job Responsibilities
- 10% Assist in preparing Ala Cart menu items, room trays (early or late), sack lunches for outings or medical appointments as needed
- 15% Cleans and maintains sanitary standards of kitchen, washing, scrubbing, mopping, dusting, polishing, or waxing floors, walls, windows, woodwork, furniture, appliances, fixtures, and equipment
- 25% Performs routine food distribution and cleanup duties
- 25% Performs routine food service tasks in the kitchen, dining room, or other dietary areas
- 15% Takes inventory and keeps daily records of nourishments, leftovers, refrigerator, and freezer temperatures
- 5% Rotation for familiarity and knowledge to be proficient in all areas of the Dietary Department
- 5% Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school supplemented by six (6) months experience in dietary related support service
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance
- Requires the ability to pass a background check
- Requires the ability to pass a drug screen and physical
- Requires completion of an Illinois Department of Public Health approved food handling training program and obtain an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited Food Handlers Certification within 30 days of employment
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime

Please note that although the State law has changed, the Department’s Veteran Homes are certified by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, which requires us to be in compliance with the Drug Free Workplace Act. Accordingly we will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of federally unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
