Summary This position is located in the Office of Protective Services, Smithsonian Institution. Responsibilities The Supervisory Police Officer (Chief of Police) has the responsibility for the development, implementation, evaluation, and management of all facets of police operations activities at NZP and SCBI. The incumbent of this position personally and through subordinate supervisors manages the National Zoological Park Police and physical security program for the NZP and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. In this position, you will: Planning and assigning work, balancing workload and adjusting schedules and assignments, providing instructions on functions and activities.. Develops and implements police security criteria to eliminate or control criminal vulnerabilities for agency facilities, research labs, administrative and support facilities and its extensive physical plant. Plans, manages, oversees, and evaluates the police patrol program to provide protection for buildings, grounds and property for all of the agency employees and for building occupants, patients and visitors to prevent, theft, and other crimes, infractions of peace on the property and forcible assault or attack. Advises senior police, public safety, and management on a full range of police and security matters pertaining to the national and international mission of the organization. Qualifications Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as Coordination and supervision of the Police Operations supplying data for estimating budgetary requirements particularly for uniforms, equipment, supplies, etc.; recommendations to the Commanding Officer regarding staffing requirements, performance standards, new policies, procedures and instruction for a more efficient police service, rating and reviewing performance of police personnel; and promoting high morale and maintaining discipline. police and security strategies. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience.
