Job Description
CLASS DESCRIPTION

THE COMMUNITY

THE DEPARTMENT AND POSITION
The Recreation Department manages a full range of recreational and special activities for youth, adults, and seniors. The department also schedules activities, building rentals, picnic reservations, sports fields and tennis courts. Summer Camp Counselors will assist in facilitating and leading Camp Everything and supporting the department's overall day camp program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (DUTIES)

Duties and Responsibilities:
Typical job duties are:

    • Active supervision of children in summer camp.
    • Support the implementation of educational and recreational activities that promote physical, mental, and social development.
    • Foster a safe, clean, and stimulating environment for children.
    • Interact with recreation staff, youth participants, caregivers, and the general public.
    • Cordially assist those with questions and inquiries.
    • Present and maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, including wearing appropriate attire for the position and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm as duties and responsibilities are carried out.
    • Set up and take down equipment and ensure all equipment and supplies are properly stored.
    • Enforce rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by Department policies and procedures.
    • Complete appropriate reports and forms as necessary.
    • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of age-appropriate youth activities.
  • Knowledge of youth development.
  • Ability to conduct and participate in recreation activities.
  • Ability to maintain physical and mental capacities appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to learn all of the latest safety standards and information related to supervision of children.
  • Ability to demonstrate good customer service and staff relations.
  • Ability to assist with related clerical duties.
  • Professional work habits including but not limited to reliability, dependability, creativity, and demonstration of enthusiasm.
  • Ability to work varying shifts.

Experience and Education
  • Knowledge, interest, and experience working with children.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • CPR/First Aid Certified.
  • Units in Early Childhood Education or Child Development preferred. Transcripts required.
** Appropriate clearance from background check/fingerprinting if 18 or older

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Other helpful Information:

  • All camps are based at locations in El Cerrito close to BART and the Ohlone bike trail.
  • Hiring at all levels – youth work “rookies” to experienced Teachers.
  • Summer Program runs Monday, June 12– Friday, August 11, 2023.
  • Training Dates: Tuesday, June 6 - Saturday, June 10, 2023
  • El Cerrito Recreation offers weekly Summer Day Camp for ages 4-14. Camps include themed enrichment activities, swimming, field trips, and arts.
  • Full-day and part-day shifts available from 7:45am-5:45pm Monday-Friday.
  • Pay range depends on experience.


This position is non-benefited.
In accordance with California state law, you are entitled to three (3) paid sick leave days per year. These days are eligible for use following your 90th day of employment with the City.
