Job Description
La Plata County Student Intern GIS Technician Provides technical land-related information to the public & County staff; performs data creation & data editing for County GIS projects. Uses ESRI & other GIS applications to make custom maps for County staff. Creates GIS data by digitizing or scanning; edits & creates GIS data by keyboard entry; checks newly plotted maps for accuracy & consistency. Position requires 1 yr of GIS education from college or technical school, 2 yrs of relevant exper or any combination of education & exper thereof. This is a temporary, PT, in-office position allowing for 50-120 hours over a 15-week period for Fall semester. CLASS TITLE: GIS TECHNICIAN GRADE: DEPARTMENT: ADMINISTRATION FLSA STATUS: N REPORTS TO: GIS MANAGER DATE: 03/13 JOB SUMMARY: Provides technical land related information to the public; provides County staff with answers to technical land related questions; performs data creation and data editing for County GIS projects. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Interacts with surveyors, appraisers, attorneys, real estate personnel, right of way agents, oil and gas companies personnel, title companies personnel, and others regarding tax maps, legal descriptions, title searches, easements, survey plats, parcel ownership, etc. Interacts with County Assessor's staff, Planning Department staff, Treasurer's staff, Clerk's staff, Building Department staff, Road and Bridge Department staff, County administration staff and others regarding tax maps, legal descriptions, title searches, easements, survey plats, parcel ownership, etc. Uses GIS applications to make custom maps for County staff in support of County projects. Creates GIS data by digitizing or scanning; edits and creates GIS data by keyboard entry; checks newly plotted maps for accuracy and consistency. Interacts with GIS Manager with regard to GIS applications and products. Notifies Planning Department of potential illegal land subdivisions and boundary adjustments. Checks own work for accuracy and completeness. Performs other related duties as assigned. Regular and predictable attendance is required. MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED: Computer Printer Digitizer Plotter Engineering Copy Machine MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Education and Experience: One year certificate from college or technical school; and, Two years of progressively responsible related experience; or, Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Licenses and Certifications: None. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Computer applications related to the work. Arc/Info or ArcView software desired. Mapping conventions, principles and legal descriptions. Deed language and conventions. Surveying principles. Skill in: Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines. Researching, compiling, and summarizing a variety of informational and statistical data and materials. Using mathematics. Communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Working Conditions and Physical Demands: The incumbent's working conditions are moderately quiet. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time, to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to verbally communicate to exchange information. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
