This position will be filled either as an SRA 1 Non-Exempt or SRA 2 Exempt, based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate identified for hire.
DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision and guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI), graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, the Staff Research Associate will perform standard repetitive research examining the interactions between microbial pathogens (bacteria and viruses) and cells in infected zebrafish, including projects examining inflammation and the responses of the immune system and nervous system to infection.
Tasks include imaging infected larvae through microscopy (confocal and immunofluorescence), maintaining strains of mutant and transgenic zebrafish, maintaining and generating microbial mutants (pathogenic and non-pathogenic species), manipulation of zebrafish gene function through genome editing, and genotyping zebrafish and microbes. Will participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed (when appropriate). Perform other SRA 2 or SRA 1 related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and ability to order lab supplies and equipment, with the ability to proactively and appropriately facilitate the maintenance of all lab supplies and equipment.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of aquaculture/fisheries, genetics, and/or developmental biology; acquired through a BA or BS in biology, aquaculture/fisheries, or related field, and/or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Ability to keep accurate records of experimental procedures and results, to discuss them, and to prepare relevant oral and written presentations.
- Ability to proactively and appropriately facilitate the maintenance of lab supplies and equipment, maintain steady levels of lab supplies and organized records.
- Demonstrated knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to clearly and concisely communicate ideas, thoughts, problems, and policies, with a strong portfolio of interpersonal skills which include the ability to interact with tact, diplomacy and sensitivity.
- Experience with zebrafish aquaculture.
- Ability to inject zebrafish embryos at the 1-cell stage with reliable and consistent results.
- Experience with standard recombinant DNA research techniques and standard laboratory procedures such as genome editing, DNA cloning, and immunostaining.
- Familiarity with Apple and PC computers and demonstrated ability to work independently with a variety of computer applications such as word processing, database, spreadsheet, and graphics software. Willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
- Experience with microscopy, preferably confocal imaging.
- Demonstrated experience in microbiology, with some experience in bacterial genetics.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Must be willing and able to safely work with, and in proximity to, BSL2 bacteria and viruses.
- Must have the appropriate physical strength for handling aquaculture equipment.
- Appropriate dexterity for manipulating zebrafish embryos.
- Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
- This position will be filled either as an SRA 1 Non-Exempt or SRA 2 Exempt, based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate identified for hire.
- Must be willing to be flexible with work hours to include occasional evening or weekend work as required for experiments.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $56,527 - $90,930 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $27.07 - $43.55
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
