Job Description
What to Expect
The Manufacturing Engineer, Vehicle Engineering, will be responsible for the development and /or improvement of remote laser welding, validation, and fixture design for the Seats Sub-assemblies as well as supporting design, production & quality teams on future Tesla programs.
With exposure to remote laser welding Automation systems design, build and commissioning experience, the Manufacturing Engineer will be a hands-on contributor in ensuring new production equipment immediately meets productivity and quality requirements as well as developing new high intellectual property processes. Manufacturing Engineer within the Seats Manufacturing Engineering Team requires strong engineering skills, a passion to push the boundaries of technology, and the drive to make our designs successful. You must have a genuine passion for engineering products that will fundamentally change the world’s energy infrastructure, and thrive working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
In addition to developing manufacturing equipment and processes, Manufacturing Engineers work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle. They will work closely with Design Engineering, Quality and Production to take design changes, new model designs and manufacturing efficiency improvements from initial concept through prototype development and into full production.
What You’ll Do
Equipment Development & Implementation
  • Management of suppliers during specification, design, buyoff, and installation of manufacturing equipment
  • Work with suppliers to development weld fixture design, weld cell design, and post-processing assembly stations
  • Perform weld validation and capability studies
  • Collaborate with Design teams on development of next generation structures
  • Develop welding process sequence, establish critical process parameters, and validate critical weld quality
  • Design, procurement, construction, integration and deployment of manufacturing automation equipment and fixtures for medium and high-volume production
  • Authoring of technical specifications for automated remote laser welding equipment
  • Design of dimensional check fixtures and quality sampling procedures such as cut-and-etch and destructive testing

Process Development and Implementation

  • Design of production workstations for ergonomics and efficiency
  • Training of technicians and line operators on manufacturing processes
  • Performance of process analysis, DOE, PFMEA, line balancing and capacity modeling
  • Development of new manufacturing processes
What You’ll Bring
  • Proven communication skills and experience with cross-functional team interaction
  • 3+ years of work experience in laser welding manufacturing environment
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment
  • Creating detailed equipment documentation and technical specifications for manufacturing equipment
  • SME in Laser equipment, generators, chiller, laser heads
  • Proven knowledge of GD&T
  • BS/MS Mechanical, Mechatronic, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent
  • SME in laser weld monitoring systems
  • Experience developing mechanical equipment, fixturing, tooling and layout in 3D and 2D CAD environment (SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD)
