Job Description

We are excited to hire a Sr. Director of Sports Turf & Grounds. This position will oversee the day-to-day management of all sports fields and site Turf managers/directors. Employ best management practices in all phases of responsibilities to maintain entire property at the Training Facility and the Field at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium to the highest of standards to ensure the property is in a safe, functional, and presentable manner for all users and visitors of the property.
Responsibilities include:
Oversees the Management of the Sports Turf Program at Training Center and Empower Field at Mile High by:
  • Ensuring seasonal soil and water testing procedures are completed and results are properly analyzed
  • Coordinating field use with Football Operations and Stadium Operations for non-football events on playing surfaces and larger scale events as it pertains to the stadium field
  • Approving purchasing of all equipment, materials, and supplies required for maintenance of sports fields at sites as it applies to approved budgets
  • Communication with Head Coach, GM, SVP of Operations, Stadium GM and Senior Director of Facilities, Construction and Planning on all player safety issues and concerns in a timely manor
  • Collaborating the coordination of playing field layout schedule according to seasonal use with Turf Manager and Football Operations
  • Supervising cultural practices to include mowing (height and frequency), irrigation use, fertility programs, plant growth regulators, fungicide applications, seasonal renovations, over-seeding, topdressing, weed control, pesticide applications, turf grass covers, inclement weather procedures etc. for both sites
  • Monitoring the management of playing field hydronic soil heat systems and SubAir system
  • Overseeing the operation and maintenance of company owned equipment and vehicles
  • Ensuring upkeep of three natural grass playing fields and one synthetic playing surface at training facility and one grass field at stadium, while adhering to NFL guidelines and policies
  • Ensure monitoring of adverse weather conditions in conjunction with VP of Security, Senior VP of Operations, Football Operations, and Coaching Staff; communicating directly with 3rd party weather prognosticators (Skyview Weather) and relay all pertinent information as necessary as it pertains to facility and stadium practices
  • Administering budgets created by both Turf Managers and monitor its execution
  • Overseeing playing field painting operations
  • Monitoring all associated field maintenance logs; chemical application and field usage logs; and MSDS manuals are kept up to date by both site Turf Managers
Oversees the management of the landscape maintenance at Training Center by:
  • Monitoring the maintenance of property landscape, including but not limited to, all fine turf areas, native grass areas, planting beds, trees, and shrubs to ensure appearance is of organizational standards
  • Approve purchasing all equipment, materials, and supplies required for maintenance of all landscape areas as it applies to approved budgets
  • Supervising the implementation of cultural practices to include mowing (height and frequency), irrigation use, fertility program, tree and shrub care, annual flower beds, seasonal renovations
  • Monitor Grounds Managers Negotiation of outside contracts for mowing and weed control in native grass areas as well as tree maintenance services and parking lot sweeping / cleaning
  • Monitor the maintaining of all landscape maintenance logs; chemical application and fertility logs; and MSDS manuals
  • Administer the Developed budget for grounds maintenance and monitor its execution
Directs site and grounds maintenance at Training Center by:
  • Monitor the maintenance and repair of all drainage areas including detention ponds and sediment basins, replacing damaged concrete and pathway areas, curbs, and gutters as well as maintaining all perimeter fencing, gates, and walls on property
  • Oversees the Management of all snow removal operations for the Training Center by assisting Turf staff in executing collaborated plan
  • Approve waste management services coordinated by Managers with outside contractor for all on-site receptacles for Turf and Operations
  • Approving purchasing of all equipment, materials, and supplies required for snow removal operations as it applies to approved budgets
  • Oversees the development and implementation of strategies to control flow of sub-surface ground water and storm water run-off
  • Coordinate with others on parking lot maintenance and repairs – negotiate all outside contracts as required
Manages various projects related to turf, landscape and grounds maintenance by:
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of project plans, including but not limited to design, permitting, timelines, storm water/erosion control, sod/field replacements, etc.
  • Overseeing all work to ensure quality standards and expectations are met
  • Assisting other departments with projects as they pertain to playing fields, landscape areas or other areas on the property of the Training Center
  • Budget management
  • Providing support to SVP of Operations as well as Broncos Ownership on large scale projects
Performs game day responsibilities by:
  • Ensuring all game day field operations are in compliance with NFL Rules, regarding field set-up, weather, and tarping policies – all issues reported to NFL and Broncos’ personnel
  • Assessing game field conditions for all home and away football games including potential weather impacts on the playing surface
Leads, directs, and manages department staff by:
  • Supervising and motivating Sports Turf and Grounds staff to ensure all football playing surfaces and Training Center property meet NFL standards and team expectations
Requirements:
  • 5+ years management experience with Projects and Staff management
  • Bachelor’s degree in Turf Management, Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field
  • Experience in department and project budget development, implementation, and management

Preferred expectations:
  • Sports field and/or golf course construction experience
  • Thorough knowledge of turf grass science and management, landscape management, parking lot and sidewalk maintenance, computerized irrigation systems, and hydronic soil heating systems
  • Adept at operating and maintaining industry-standard equipment
  • Must work flexible hours including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Snow removal operations and management experience
  • 5+ years management experience in cold weather climate turf management
  • Ability to work closely with all members of the organization, with high level of commitment
  • Project and/or Property Management experience
  • Must have ability to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality
In accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the expected salary range for this position is $115,000 - $130,000. This position will be located both at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium and at the Training Center in Englewood, CO and must be available for a flexible schedule and to work all Broncos games and nights/weekends as needed.
