We are seeking a dynamic Spanish Language Interpreter to join our Interpreter Services Department at Rush University Medical Center! The desired candidate will have the ability to multitask effectively.

This is a Full Time position
80 hours every two weeks, benefit-eligible
Monday to Friday
Position Highlights:
The Spanish Language Interpreter conducts medical and general Spanish language interpreting for Medical Center staff, patients and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Coordinate delivery of Language Services to all Medical Center areas and satellite clinics. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and ICARE values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.
Position Responsibilities:
Conducts medical and general interpretation for Rush University Medical Center, Rush University Medical Group, Rush Oak Park Hospital staff, patients and their families and visitors during assigned shift.
Participates in pre-scheduled patient/staff conferences as assigned (in-person, video, or telephone), as well as in on-call interpretation needs during shift.
Acts as a liaison between Rush staff and patients when interpreting questions, directions, policies and procedures.
Assists Rush staff with the assessment of situations in a culturally diverse context
Per department and medical center standards, records daily information regarding interpretation services provided. Assists with reporting as needed.
Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed.
Per department standards, contacts non-English speaking patients upon admission.
Communicates any patient questions or concerns to said staff.
Informs the proper departments or parties with regard to any cases requiring special attention or follow-up.
Assesses patients' understanding of discharge instructions.
Scheduling and dispatching of staff, associates, and agency interpreters
Review requests on Rush scheduling modules
Schedules appropriate mode of interpreter (in-person, telephone or video) to requests
Dispatches, when assigned, staff and vendors to appointments and on-demand requests.
Assists in the process of translation of written materials as needed
Identifies materials requiring translation
May translate non-technical instructions, patient-related information and simple forms into written format as needed. Serves as proofreader for material translated by the professional translation service.
Participates in educating Rush staff on use of interpreters through formal and informal mechanisms.
Informs Rush staff of policies and procedures relating to interpreter services.
Educate Rush staff on existing resources to augment language services (i.e. auxiliary aids, over-the-phone interpreters)
Participate in the training and orientation of new staff interpreters as needed.
Cooperates with Rush staff and other department interpreters toward the provision of support to the patient served.
May assist department with operational or administrative needs relative to interpreter services.
Monitors effectiveness of interpreter services provided. Recommends any service or operational improvements to Manager or Lead interpreter.
May assist with administrative needs, to include fielding of translation requests, coordination of assignment requests to interpreter staff, and coordination of documentation.
Completes other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications Include:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor's degree preferred.
CHI or CMI National Interpreter Certification preferred. (must receive within in one year of hire)
Must have proven verbal and written fluency in specified language as well as in English, including fluency in medical terminology.
Must have at least six month or more of experience providing interpretation services in a health care setting, including experience with related documentation.
Must be familiar with healthcare delivery issues and setting.
Successful completion of a 40-hour minimum accredited medical interpreting course required.
Exemplary customer service skills.
Must be able to effectively interact with a broad range of medical center staff and patients.
Must be a strong team player.
Must have the ability to multi-task. Must have the ability to problem-solve and trouble-shoot.
Position requires frequent and continual movement between medical center departments and buildings throughout any given shift.
