Description

This position is in Caterpillar's Global Sound and Cooling team and is focused on supporting product sound needs. This team is a great fit for people that enjoy being on a highly collaborative team, who like hands-on work, and want a challenging job troubleshooting highly technical issues. It is based out of our Peoria Proving Grounds, but the incumbent may also perform testing and product support work at Caterpillar factories or Dealerships, the Tucson Proving Ground in Arizona, or at customer sites. The position is to fill a mid-career type position so some background in product sound testing and supporting design for noise reduction is required.

Job Duties

  • The Sound Test \ Validation Engineer will analyze & summarize test results and generate conclusions & recommendations for improved NVH performance of the machines being developed.
  • The Sound Test \ Validation Engineer is a critical position in the global sound community. They are expected to be able to communicate well, as educating others in product sound, and communication of results / conclusions are required. They do not need to know how to solve every sound issue, but they need to know how to work in a group and be able to learn who to go to for specific sound expertise.
  • The Sound Test \ Validation Engineer will draft, coordinate, and execute sound testing plans. This requires the ability to use data acquisition equipment in field and lab environments, and to possess strong problem-solving skills and a basic grasp of machine sound.
  • The Sound Test \ Validation Engineer works with the product design and commercial teams to set targets, evaluate designs, and create, then oversee the execution of testing/analysis programs to support product development. This includes both current and new products.
  • The Sound Test \ Validation Engineer will engage with Caterpillar factories to ensure machines meet labeled sound levels and assist as necessary with troubleshooting machine and factory sound pad issues.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering or Physics with Acoustics focus.

1 year of product engineering experience for mechanical systems (OR Master’s degree with Acoustics of Mechanical Systems focus would be accepted in lieu)

1 year of experience in sound testing and analysis of mechanical systems (OR Master’s degree with Acoustics of Mechanical Systems focus would be accepted in lieu)

1 year experience with collecting and processing high-frequency vibration and acoustic data.

Capability to climb ladders into large machines and mechanical aptitude to do simple mechanic tasks.

High initiative, good interpersonal skills, logical thinking, and good verbal and written skills.

Additional Information

The location for this position is Peoria, IL (Peoria Proving Grounds).

Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

This position may require up to 10% travel. Some work cannot be performed at the Proving Ground so occasional trips to factories, dealers, or customers may be required.
