Job Description
World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s leading conservation organizations, seeks a Senior Program Officer, Shipping Policy and Corporate Engagement.


Major Function


Based in Washington, DC and reporting to the Manager, Ocean Markets, the SPO, Shipping Policy and Corporate Engagement will lead the development and execution of the US-Oceans shipping private sector engagement and policy engagement portfolio of work for the WWF US Office. This will be done in coordination across the WWF Global Network aligning and building on relevant areas of shipping engagement under implementation. This position will focus on global engagement with the sector as well as developing a comprehensive platform of work to support initiatives for work under the WWF US Arctic Program.


  • Monitor and analyze new technical information, policy development, and trends related to the shipping industry, and advise involvement or consideration accordingly.
  • Contribute to the implementation of protected areas, including WWF’s ArcNet program and WWF’s global Arctic and Latin America “Blue Corridors” project to protect critical marine mammal migrations routes through increased protection and effective industry voyage planning.
  • In coordination with the Manager, Ocean Markets, develop proposals and assist in outreach to prospective funders.
  • Lead development of the private sector engagement and policy engagement strategy on shipping for WWF US Oceans Team, targeting efforts to reduce and mitigate impacts of global shipping.
  • Communicate conservation priorities and results to a region and national audience through conferences and meetings.
  • Assess input from internal and external stakeholders on science and industry best practices to inform shipping policy and shipping sector asks.
  • Serve as WWF US lead for supporting a unified shipping industry engagement strategy across the WWF Network.
  • Work closely with the WWF US Oceans Blue Finance team to develop strategies for engaging relevant Ocean ESG and blended finance strategies as needed to drive impact and implementation of work globally and in the Arctic seascape.
  • Engage in US and international shipping forums (e.g., International Maritime Organization) to advance policy positions and reduce the climate, noise, and disturbance impacts of shipping through the Arctic, and worldwide.
  • Lead US-Ocean implementation of projects to mitigate impacts to wildlife from shipping traffic and related noise, oil spills, collisions, growing infrastructure, and emerging issues.
  • Drive sector level strategies in the Arctic as aligned to the WWF US Arctic strategy and other Arctic programs like the WWF Global Arctic Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Works on the development of partnerships targeting shipping industry companies.
  • Develop and manage one on one partnerships with the shipping industry companies to supporting achieving environmental targets and as needed to refine corporate asks.
  • Excellent communication skills in one-to-one and group settings.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime transport and marine environmental policy with at least 4 years of experience working in the sector.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% as necessary.
  • Ability to take initiative and facilitate the work of others.
  • 6 to 8 years experience in the shipping industry, ocean-relevant private sector engagement, ocean-relevant environmental science, or an advanced degree with 3 to 5 years of experience.
  • Demonstrates courage by speaking up even when it is difficult, or unpopular.
  • Experience working with indigenous, or minority communities is desired.
  • Builds trust with colleagues by acting with integrity, owning mistakes, and holding oneself accountable.
  • Excellent organizational and project implementation skills.
  • Experience writing complex funding proposals, delivering engaging presentations, and negotiating complex partnerships.
  • Ability to think strategically and synthesize and incorporate input from a variety of stakeholders, collaborators, and fellow staff members.
  • Proactive, self-motivated individual who works well within a team and demonstrates ability to work autonomously.
