Senior It Systems Engineer

As a member of the Tier III group, the Sr IT Systems Engineer provides advanced Tier III support by troubleshooting and repairing UNIX/Linux servers and monitoring Lumen network devices, tools, and services for a global Ethernet network. The position serves as the Performance Platform Engineering (PPE) team primary point of contact (POC) for problem escalations. The Tier III interacts with Field Operations, internal UI teams, Network Planning, and other applications teams to identify and develop solutions to escalated problems. The position requires good UNIX/Linux system administration skills and a fluent understanding of Layers 1/2/3 inter-dependences and IP proficiency.

The network is expected to sustain continual growth to include additional sites and customers across the life of the program and the ITSE responsibilities continue to grow as new customers are added to the network.

• Provide technical input to operational documentation and SOP for IP and NM discipline supporting the NOC
• Understand Ethernet deployment models and have proficiency in layers 1, 2, and 3 of the OSI stack
• Administration of network management applications such as Zabbix for monitoring, compliance checks, and firmware upgrades
• On-call after- hours/on-call support as required
• Operates as network and systems technical expert on data collection for enterprise network elements and serves as the first level of escalation for assigned servers and applications.
• Provide expertise to monitor, diagnose, and troubleshoot network problems in a mixed vendor environment. The PPE team interacts extensively with the internal engineering, support teams, and equipment/software vendors to resolve problems
• Provide technical guidance and direction to junior technicians
• Performs advanced diagnostics using software and hardware tools to determine network status and optimize application performance
• Each discipline focuses on resolving day-to-day incidents and elevating systemic issues
• Troubleshoot, identify and resolve logical & physical network issues and identify problem trends and systemic issues before Tier III elevation

• Expertise in the uses of network management protocols, tools, and products, including but not limited to Zabbix, SNMP monitoring, and MIB files is required.
• ITSE II is expected to have working knowledge of layer 1, 2, and 3 data networking.
• Demonstrates a high level of proficiency in IP technical discipline. Able to operate and accomplish technical tasks with minimum guidance. Proficient knowledge of common network architectures for routing, switching, and security technologies is required.
• Minimum of 5 years experience working as a UNIX/Linux system administrator
• Experience with Wireshark or tcpdump for troubleshooting network issues
• Firm knowledge of Python, PERL, and/or shell (Bash) scripting languages
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in an Information Technology field and at least six years of experience in a network management environment
• Proficiency with writing REST API, Swagger documentation, and Postman or equivalent
• Experience using Ansible, writing stories, creating job aids, and coaching peers
• Knowledge and experience with Cisco, Juniper, or Nokia CLI is preferred
