Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is one of the world’s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions. Since its founding in 1869, the Museum has advanced its global mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibitions.
The AMNH is searching for a Senior Director of Visitor Services to provide strategic leadership and managerial oversight for the Visitor Services Department which encompasses: Central Reservations and Group Sales, Parking and Transportation, Volunteer Services and the Visitor Services staff. The Sr. Director will also focus on visitor experience and engagement and ways to improve the service provided to the Museum’s visitors.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide support to the Volunteer Services managerial staff who are responsible for 1100+ volunteers throughout the Institution.
- Participate in several cross departmental initiatives and committees including: Officer of the Day program, Safety Committee, Business Continuity Committee, Exhibition Topic Incubation Committee.
- Focus on ensuring budget and revenue targets are met.
- Provide mentorship and hands on support to managers in successfully handling any employee relations issue, staff training and recruitment.
- Collaborate closely with other departments within Operations and the Museum community such as, Security, Custodial, Education, Membership, Development, Events and Conference Services.
- Oversee a sophisticated operating and personnel services budget which exceeds $4 million with expected revenue targets in several areas.
- Lead frontline operations and admissions area for the institution which provides over $50 million in annual revenue.
The expected salary range for the Senior Director, Visitor Services is $170,000 – 190,000. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a closely related management capacity focused on customer service and engagement.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Computer skills, Excel, Microsoft Office and ticketing system experience preferred.
- Demonstrated success managing a large and diverse staff.
