Essential Functions
Job Summary
Function:
  • Entrepreneurial, partnership-focused leader with a business and community engagement mindset to lead its new University of Texas at San Antonio innovation hub network.
  • Lead and help coordinate vibrant engagement with the business community broadly defined (e.g., established businesses, high tech companies, the growing entrepreneurial community, public sector users of technology) with a constant focus on fostering economic development through the creation of new programs and partnerships with the university.
  • Complement existing UTSA programming in areas of government-university-industry collaboration.
  • Provide thoughtful societally-just community economic engagement.
  • Provide specialized skill, strategic planning and doing, administration, program development related to advancing government and industry connectivity with university innovation and R&D.

Scope:
  • Build out and scale a distributed network of innovation hubs across San Antonio that will support lab-to-market innovation programming, collaboration with established companies and bold entrepreneurs, and thoughtful societally-just community engagement.
  • Launch a bold new platform to support translation of innovation into practice, accumulation of user and market signals to guide university R&D
  • The director should have a strong passion for higher education's positive impact on communities, broad knowledge of and passion for delivering on use-inspired innovation and technology, workforce development issues, a love of San Antonio and a vision for how the Innovation Hub Network can be a bridge between external innovation and technology ecosystem and UTSA.
  • The Innovation Hub Network will provide venues that will support innovation development programming, collaboration with established companies, economic and innovation development entities, and bold entrepreneurs.
  • The director will need well-honed communication and organizational skills, and a strong ability to lead through collaboration and consensus-building.
  • This role will critically evaluate stakeholder needs, the changing requirements and innovation and technology gaps, and opportunities to stimulate economic growth through UTSA's partnerships, programs, and advanced facilities.
  • The director will serve as a nexus between the research and innovation activities of the university, the workforce development efforts of San Antonio, Bexar County and regional governments, new and established entrepreneurs, industry leading companies, and community-based organizations focused on economic development and equity.

Duties
Typical:
  • Support the Associate VP, Innovation & Economic Development to achieve the overarching vision and mission of the Institute for Economic Development and the Office of Commercialization and Innovation.
  • Collaborate internally within UTSA, e.g., with Career Engaged Learning, Professional and Continuing Education, and other university-based units focused on workforce development.
  • Establish policies that support the Innovation Hub Network business strategies, plans and comprehensive goals for performance and growth.
  • Manage federal contracts and other government and industry agreements, ensure financial and legal compliance.
  • Oversee daily operations of the Innovation Hub Network and manage staff in finance, marketing, communications, project management and other related roles.
  • Evaluate performance by analyzing and interpreting data/metrics and development and submit timely reports to the sponsor and Institute leadership on all matters of importance.
  • Assist in pursuit of new lines of revenue and other fundraising ventures.
  • Manage relationships with partners and vendors to include facilitation of membership agreements, subcontracts, and services agreements.
  • Provide project management structure and support for collaborative research and workforce development activities.
  • Assure all federal cost-sharing activities are managed and the Innovation Hub meets all requirements as determined by overarching sponsor contracts and agreements. Organize meetings, events, and board meetings with the highest quality planning and execution.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of companies and be responsible for growing the total size of the portfolio by identifying prospects and creating new partnerships between them and the university; develop an understanding of the strategic technology and business challenges of portfolio companies; maintain knowledge of UTSA scholarship and research, activities, and resources and accurately match them to the needs of the portfolio companies; maintain productive relationships and encourage collaboration with UTSA departments, laboratories, and faculty; identify new opportunities for company-UTSA interaction and collaboration; plan and execute a series of company-specific meetings and events with UTSA faculty; and proactively identify and bring developments and opportunities of potential value to the attention of portfolio companies
  • Developing new product lines, processes, or services to ensure continued growth.
  • Communicate and coordinate with stakeholders about project updates and next steps to ensure successful implementation.
  • Review competitors' products to identify opportunities for new products or improvements to existing ones.
  • Monitor industry trends and competitor activities to identify new opportunities.
  • Perform other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Associate Vice President for Innovation and Economic Development.
  • Manage the development of new products and services, including working with designers and engineers on prototypes.
  • Develop and manage budgets for projects and departments, including hiring staff as needed.
  • Create a vision for future projects based on research and data analysis of competitor's offerings and market trends.
  • Meet regularly with stakeholders to discuss progress on projects, offer feedback, and resolve any issues.
  • Develop and nurture strategic communication with other UTSA administrative units and participate in office-wide programs, conference development, faculty liaison activities, and faculty travel planning.
  • Perform other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Associate Vice President

Required Qualifications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. .
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field, such as engineering, computer science or business.
  • Six years of experience in a related role, i.e., innovation manager, business analyst or a business developer, technology, manufacturing, finance.
  • Knowledge of personal computers, Microsoft Office, various accounting software and standard office equipment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of data analysis and performance/operation metrics.
  • Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field, such as engineering, computer science or business.
  • Eight years' experience in a related role. At least five years in a supervisory capacity.


Working Conditions
  • Normal office conditions.
  • In-state and out-of-state travel as required.

This position will be primarily located: UTSA Downtown Campus
On Campus: Primary work location will be on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
Hybrid-Regularly: This position will require working both remotely and on campus (approximately five or more days on campus per month). Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
