Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

This full-time (payroll title: Technical Editor II) position assists faculty in the Infectious Disease Sciences (IDS) Program in the planning, writing, editing and production of a variety of scientific and technical documentation. Responsible for production and editing of highly specialized technical and scientific materials for publication, including, journals, manuscripts, technical manuals, grant applications, posters, presentations, etc., to ensure that all materials meet established standards of appearance and content. This position reports to the IDS Senior Science Writer.


Role requires a self-motivated individual with an eye for detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Uses discretion within existing guidelines and standards. Always ensures that final review/authorization of materials be made by supervisor and/or responsible faculty/scientific staff.


Responsibilities


  • Review professional journals and books to stay abreast of new requirements in research and technical writing fields.
  • Coordinate and edit revisions to book chapters, manuscripts, articles, reports, clinical protocols, and teaching materials of a highly technical nature.
  • Recommend edits on written materials to improve readability, coherence, accuracy, grammar and conformity to internal and publishing standards of style.
  • Copyedit and proofread scientific manuscripts and coordinate journal submission.
  • Maintain reference database and filing system of Program resources including, but not limited to: professional CV’s and Biosketches, Other Support Information, Manuscripts, Endnote and other documentation/accolades. Ensure that all information is up to date.
  • Produce figures and/or graphics, visual aids, tables, etc. needed to support the text material for publications and grant applications.
  • Review, edit and participate in grant writing and grant-related documents. Ensure that documents are in proper format and complete. Assist program faculty and staff to prepare grant and contract project submissions.
  • Coordinate documentation preparation with publication deadlines, grant deadlines, collaboration efforts and other projects.
  • Provide editorial assistance and guidance to PIs on correspondence, presentations, and other technical documentation.
  • Format and convert documents according to established standards.
  • Provide other relevant technical and administrative support as needed, particularly regarding scientific meetings and events hosted by the program.
  • Responsible for drafting the award letters for the IDS Program to nominate faculty and scientific staff for international and national awards.
  • Accommodate and gain concurrence of author on edited materials; make further revisions as required.


Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Excellent communication skills with attention to detail
  • Expertise in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Endnote, Reference Manager, and Adobe software
  • Ability to handle multiple projects with different deadlines at once
  • Strong editing and writing skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or related field


Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability for quantitative analysis along with a basic understanding of statistics
  • Experience with bibliographic (EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero, etc.) and/or figure generation (GraphPad Prism, Illustrator, BioRender, HTML, etc.) software, as well as familiarity with scientific research methods and publication
  • Master of Science (MS) or Doctorate-degree (PhD) in scientific field directly related to department/program
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, and experience with grant preparation and drafting of medical protocols; understanding of clinical regulatory documentation and processes
  • Certification in Technical Writing

The hourly pay range for this position is from $29.42 to $44.11 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
