Job Description

Position Overview

The Institute for Bioengineering Research (IBER), University of Kansas School of Engineering is recruiting a research technician. The Institute serves as a catalyst for collaborative research focused on: i) advanced multi-scale structure/property analyses of materials, tissues, and material/tissue interfaces; ii) multi-modal characterization to interpret material/tissue interfacial responses that evolve with time, temperature and function; iii) providing an environment for novel approaches to biomaterials discovery and medical device innovation. This position will support laboratory research activities and includes 1) performing experiments as directed and 2) general laboratory support and maintenance of associated resources. Associated research activities are diverse and will include FTIR spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray micro-CT, optical microscopy, surface analysis and mechanical testing.

60% - Perform experiments as directed or trained.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of experiments performed.
  • These duties include carrying out directed research experiments relative to the mission of the IBER. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to perform experiments on an individual basis that pertain to current research topics in the IBER.
  • Design experiments employing techniques such as FTIR, AFM, thermal techniques and dynamic mechanical analyses.
40% - General laboratory support and maintenance of associated resources.
  • Coordination of activities on instrumentation.
  • Preparing standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Management of laboratory records and laboratory documents.
  • Write Reports: These duties include graphing and presenting data. Writing technical reports for the lab.
  • This position will order and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents, assist in maintaining equipment, and assist with human resource support efforts (e.g., training personnel).

Required Qualifications

  • Computer skills in MS Office (Excel, Word and Power Point) as evidenced in application materials.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail as evidenced by application materials or interview.
  • High school/GED and 5 years related experience OR Associate's degree with 1 year experience in an Academic or industrial laboratory in chemistry, biophysics, pharmaceutics, mechanical engineering, materials engineering or related research areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, physics, chemistry or closely related discipline and 1 year experience in an Academic or industrial laboratory in chemistry, biophysics, pharmaceutics, mechanical engineering, materials engineering or related research areas.
  • Knowledge of structural characterization of materials using vibrational spectroscopy as evidenced by appropriate laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of morphologic characterization of materials using optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electron microscopy as evidenced by appropriate laboratory experience and/or relevant coursework.
  • Knowledge of morphologic characterization of tissues using optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electron microscopy as evidenced by appropriate laboratory experience and/or relevant coursework.
  • Data analysis using software packages (i.e., Origin, MatLab). Must be able to use the Internet to perform scientific literature searches.
  • Academic or industrial experience in HPLC, GC and MS techniques.
  • Knowledge of property characterization of materials using mechanical testing apparatus as evidenced by appropriate laboratory experience.
