Job Description

This Research Speech-Language Pathologist II position is ideal for an ASHA-certified SLP who has interest in specializing in treating speech sound disorders in clinical research participants, while contributing to the evidence base for the field. The SLP will follow study procedures to conduct approved clinical trials, administer standardized and researcher-administered assessments and treatment, and must be willing to learn to deliver speech sound interventions with high fidelity as part of speech therapy sessions.

Additional duties include project management; participant recruitment; maintaining and managing research data and documentation; collaborating with clinical and research experts in speech-language pathology; and assisting with dissemination of research findings. The position may be appropriate for speech-language clinicians interested in pursuing a PhD or completing postdoctoral training.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.


For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Neurosurgery at UCSF is one of the most pre-emanate neurosurgical departments in the country for clinical care, training and research. The department is number one academic research publication productivity and recently named as one of the top Neurosurgery Training Programs in the country. The Department is also ranked 4th in the nation for Neurosurgery & Neurology and is the number one Neurosurgery Department on the west coast (US News & World Report). Central administration at the Parnassus Heights location is responsible for directing all administrative functions of the department. The department’s Spine Group Team is currently located at UCSF Parnassus Campus.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic computer skills in word processing and on line communication
  • Ability to recognize signs of distress
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at various UCSF campuses
  • Licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California
  • Minimum of 12 months experience as a licensed therapist
  • CPR certification from AHA
  • Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills
  • Must be comfortable with learning to use new technology in a clinical research setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
  • American Heart Association CPR certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of a degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited professional educational program
  • Prior speech language pathology experience in an academic medical center environment
  • Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team

License/Certification

  • CPR certification from AHA
  • Licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California
