The Research Scientist, under general supervision, will be a member of a strong, regionally, and nationally recognized research program that involves interaction with research team members at Texas AgriLife Research (Amarillo, Bushland, and College Station), USDA-ARS at Bushland and Lubbock, and West Texas A&M University and with collaborators at Texas AgriLife Research and TAMU System at College Station as well as other institutes in the Great Plains. The research program will focus on molecular responses to biotic and abiotic stresses and their mechanisms. The major responsibilities are gene/QTL mapping, KASP marker development, validation and application in wheat breeding programs, as well as gene function analysis for important traits using mutations, CRISP-Cas9, RNAseq, Exome capture, GBS, and skimseq, etc. The projects will involve with making wheat doubled haploid for breeding, genetic and genomic studies. The scientist will analyze data from bi-parental mapping, association mapping, and genomic prediction with high throughput genotyping and phenotyping data. Currently we have projects funded by USDA-NIFA Foundation, WheatCAP, US Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative, and TAMUS. The scientist will be PI eligible to apply any grants as a PI and CO-PI. The scientist will summarize and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific publications. The scientist will supervise student workers, graduate students and research technicians as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Field related work for the projects including preparing for planting, measuring any parameters related to research projects Supervises student workers, graduate students, and research technicians as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Utilizes computers to generate graphics and statistical displays; will train and supervise technicians and graduate students in the planning and conduct of research and data analysis techniques.
  • DNA, RNA extraction, KASP markers designing and screening, real time PCR, gene expression analysis, using Software to analyze results including linkage map construction, QTL analysis, sequence alignment, gene identification, association mapping, genomic prediction and selection using SNPs from GBS, exon capture, Skimseq, etc. Wheat doubled haploid development.
  • Greenhouse related work including crossing, planting, management and harvesting
  • Supports research projects through design, completion, and analysis of experiments; assists in writing grant proposals, progress reports, and manuscripts for publication.
  • Installs, maintains, and operates laboratory equipment; assists in ensuring availability of proper laboratory supplies and procures supplies as necessary.

Administrative Relationships:
  • The scientist will be supervised by Dr. Shuyu Liu, Professor and wheat geneticist at Amarillo, and work very closely with the wheat breeders, stress physiologist, pathologist and entomologist at Amarillo and within Texas A&M System or other institutes.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Six years related professional experience in plant breeding, genetics and pathology, especially in wheat.
  • Ph. D. in crop breeding, genetics or molecular genetics.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to effectively prepare research proposals as PI or CO-PI, and provide reports of research activities.
  • Knowledge and training in studying DNA, RNA, protein and gene/QTL mapping, KASP marker identification and development, gene function characterization using available techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with faculty, students and staff. Familiarity with appropriate laboratory, farm and/or technical equipment. Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Successful candidate should have a strong knowledge of molecular genetics, hand on experience to work with DNA, RNA, protein and gene isolations. Have desire to learn and use new techniques. Strong in data analyses using software including R.
