Salary Range: $95,000-$105,000
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The Cancer Research Nurse is a Registered Nurse who will be managed within the Database Shared Resources (DBSR) core of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. This position will be co-managed by the directors of the Database Shared Resources core.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Study Cohort Identification, Recruitment, and Consent:
Assist Investigators in identifying from existing biobanks or from collaborating clinicians (oncologists, surgeons, endoscopists, interventional radiologists [IR]) patient cohorts for biospecimen collection
Assist Investigators with abstraction of clinical data from the Electronic Health Record for the development of paired clinical datasets (as per Institutional Review Board [IRB] protocol)
Provide patient education (in-person and/or over the phone) during the recruitment of patients to biospecimen procurement studies/protocols or other clinical research studies
Provide informed consent
Study Biospecimen Collection and Retrieval
Place clinical orders for research tissue and blood collection
Coordinate with clinical staff or clinical research coordinator to collect blood at the clinical site or directly collect blood from study patients and provide it to the investigator
Coordinate with the Molecular Pathology Core (i.e. research pathology core) to procure samples and provide them to study investigators)
Coordinate with Proceduralist (Endoscopist and IR) for tissue procurement (e.g., retrieving specimens from the procedure room and provide to study investigators)
Assist in IRB Management (DBSR-related IRBs or study investigators) under the Direction of the Co-Directors and Resource Manager
Study Collection Biospecimen Documentation and Training:
Maintain a log of study participants contacted, consented, and/or enrolled in research studies
Review new protocols, and reeducate existing protocols at least bi-annually
Provide biospecimen retrieval and study implementation training for new clinical research coordinators under the direction of the Resource
Meet with new investigators quarterly or as needed to review study activities and provide a written enrollment report at least bi-annually.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Nursing or has completed an Accelerated Program in Nursing or equivalent in education and experience plus 4 years of related work experience.
New York State (NYS) RN License.
Preferred Qualifications
Clinical research experience or oncology nursing experience
Other Requirements
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training certification, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certificate, and Conflict of Interest (COI) training certification are required upon hire.
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
Computer Skills: proficiency with MS Word programs and familiarity with Mac and PC platforms.
