Job Description

The Research Engineer is part of a lab within Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University School of Engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities

The key functions of the position is performing research, analyzing data, and documentation/recording all research results. They will evaluate and analyze experimental data in alignment with the labs core function.

  • Run protein candidates on FPLC for analytical and preparative purposes
  • Work with collaborators within and outside of the Lab to initiate new projects related to protein engineering
  • Express and recombinant proteins
  • Take responsibility for function and maintenance of bioreactor and FPLC instrumentation
  • Other tasks as assigned
  • DNA cleavage assays to measure engineered nuclease activity
  • Learn about and employ various site modifications to nuclease enzymes
  • Maintain lab notebook and records of all research results
  • Order and stock precursors and supplies for protein expression
  • Complete biolayer interferometry for targeting binding affinity analyses

Qualifications

  • Ability to develop scientific research protocols and procedures is strongly preferred
  • A professional attitude, high level of motivation, initiative and good work ethic is necessary
  • Hands-on experience in protein expression research is necessary
  • Higher education experience is strongly preferred
  • Strong communication skills are necessary
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of self-motivation is preferred
  • Adaptability to ever changing projects and people is preferred
  • Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed technical instructions is necessary
  • Computer and database skills are preferred
  • A Master’s/Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary
  • Three to four years research experience is preferred
  • Ability to analyze and interpret scientific data is strongly preferred
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly is preferred
  • Ability to maintain quality and safety standards is necessary
