Hiring Department

McGraw Laboratory, School of Science and Engineering - University of Missouri-Kansas City

The Department of Biomedical Sciences was established in 1998 in response to recommendations by the American Association of Medical College’s Liaison Committee on Medical Education following an accreditation inspection. The newly established department was initially charged with the responsibility of improving the quality and relevance of basic science education for medical students. As the department has matured, we have also focused on developing research programs in specific biomedically related disciplines.

Research in the McGraw lab focuses on the development and regeneration of sensory systems using zebrafish as a model organism. The lab is seeking a Research Assistant to oversee the fish facility of around 450 tanks and to participate in basic laboratory upkeep and research. The primary duties of this position are zebrafish care and husbandry, as well as water testing and equipment maintenance. The position will include feeding the fish, maintaining a brine shrimp culture, dish washing and preparing solutions. Additional work might include molecular biology experiments and other laboratory tasks as need. Requirements for the position are an ability to work well with others, follow written instructions, to ask questions, to pay attention to detail, to have a professional attitude, punctuality, and reliability. The incumbent will also oversee undergraduate student helpers.

Good organization and computers skills, such as the ability to use Excel, Word and email is beneficial for success in this position.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree* in a field related to Life Sciences, such as Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Fishery or similar field of study .

Candidates with laboratory experience and a willingness to work with research animals.
