The Speech Language Pathologist performs advanced therapeutic habilitation services in speech language pathology. Work involves coordinating therapeutic rehabilitation activities for clients within a program area and developing protocols in habilitation or rehabilitation therapy services. May assign and/or supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
The therapist performs and interprets assessments and renders therapeutic treatment to consumers.
The Speech Language Pathologist determines communication potential and provides remediation for a wide range of individuals with communication deficits, swallowing and dysphagia challenges, and evaluates and provides augmentative communication devices and strategies.
The therapist participates in quality assurance and quality enhancement activities as required.
The therapist works under minimal supervision with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
The therapist administers and interprets assessments, develops and provides treatment for persons served.
The therapist trains staff and monitors programs for compliance and efficacy.
The therapist participates in IDT/ISP meetings to facilitate diagnosis and treatment planning.
The therapist maintains open and regular communication with the other departments, IDTs and administration to ensure the transfer of needed information and continuity of services.
The therapist will be responsible for documentation in IRIS
The therapist participates in quality assurance and quality enhancement activities related to therapeutic services.
The therapist may supervise the work of others.
The therapist may oversee or participate in student internship programs.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles of clinical therapeutic evaluation and treatment and their application to individuals with IDD.
Ability to prescribe and construct adaptive or augmentative/communication devices.
Ability to impart general and specific information about Habilitation Therapy (HT), IDD, anatomy, physiology, and treatment techniques to persons with varying levels or experience.
Ability to follow instructions and base decisions on current policies and best practice.
Ability to communicate effectively both in written form and verbally.
Ability to produce reports, progress notes and assessments utilizing computer technology.
Ability to work well with staff, foster the team process, and assume leadership role as indicated.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Current Licensure in Speech Language Pathology required. Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) preferred.

Initial Selection Criteria:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university program with major course work in speech language therapy.

  • Experience in IDD preferred.

  • Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

    Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
