Job Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is seeking a dedicated and highly motivated Infection Surveillance Nurse, RN IV under the supervision of the Infection Preventionist who would participate in the enforcement of the hospital wide Infection Prevention and Control Program including surveillance, reporting of communicable diseases, real time staff education of hospital personnel in Infection Control.

The selected candidate will become an active member of regular Environmental Rounds, construction planning and incident response. Participate in the assurance of high-quality care delivery and compliance with CMS/TJC/DPH-HCQ/CDC/etc. promulgated regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Maintain current regulations, standards, and practices of Infection Control (journals/professional meetings and communicating with peers).
  • Provide technical assistance to staff or others in the planning and implementation of department Infection Control Programs.
  • Accesses the EMR to complete chart reviews of patient suspected or known infections, either hospital acquired, or community acquired in a timely manner.
  • Participate with the Environment of Care Committee and other committees as assigned.
  • Principle reporter for communicable diseases to external regulatory bodies.
  • Participate in the creation/Edits/Evaluates policies and procedures for effective program operation.
  • Participates in contract evaluation and product evaluation associated with Infection Prevention and Control.
  • Performs quality control of internal microbiology reports to the ICP.
  • Provide staff orientation and in-service through promulgation of material arranging, planning, and conducting meetings or training sessions (planned or ad-hoc).
  • Participate in the investigation trends/clustering and outbreaks of health associated infections. Recommends plan of action and follow-up.
  • Compile and report statistical summaries regarding the status of the Hospital wide Infection Control operations including participation in the Hospital’s QAPI Program, in support of the Infection Preventionist.
  • Ensure coverage for ICP Functions. Vacation and Sick Time coverage.
  • Evaluate clinical data to ensure the appropriate interventions, when identified as needed, are taken in a timely manner and that follow up is complete and timely.
  • Participate in root cause analysis process related to any ICP issues or events.
  • Actively work with the National Patient Safety Goals applicable to the role.
  • Create and write reports relative to Infection Control and provides data as delineated in the IC Plan to appropriate committees (Medical Staff and PI Committees).
  • Support the hospital wide infection control program 24/7.

Required Qualifications:

  • Establish rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds
  • Know the types and uses of sterilization equipment used medical facilities
  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in infection control
  • Ability to gather information through observing and questioning individuals, and by examining records and documents
  • Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships
  • Prepare general reports
  • Knowledge of the types and application of emergency medical procedures such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and tourniquets
  • Ability to explain laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing agency operations and assigned unit activities
  • Can give written and oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner
  • Ability to participate in a multi-disciplinary health care team
  • Willing to work with emotionally, mentally, and or physically handicapped persons.
  • Maintain a calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s in Nursing or equivalent Master’s Certification in Infection Control (CIC)
  • Knowledge and ability to initiate and direct a program responsible for the Infection Prevention and Control programs in accordance with The Joint Commission standards for accreditation
  • A thorough working knowledge of the principles and practices of Acute Care Infection Prevention and Control

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES:Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.*

  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
