Job Description

Position Summary :

The RD intern for Sports Nutrition will work with the Football sports dietitian to ensure the Football team is prepared for SEC athletic competition by providing scientific nutrition recommendations aimed to increase athletic performance and decrease risk of injury. This position will provide high quality, continuous and comprehensive nutrition services based on progressive knowledge to create and support an intercollegiate culture where athletes, coaches and staff recognize nutrition as a critical element in academic and athletic performance.

About the Work Unit :

Vanderbilt University’s Athletics Department prepares student-athletes to become leaders and champions in life by placing the highest values on integrity, character, sportsmanship, and victory. Vanderbilt is a charter member of the Southeastern Conference and is the conference's only private school. The university fields 16 varsity teams (6 men's teams and 10 women's teams, a total of 351 student athletes), 14 of which compete in the Southeastern Conference.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Develop effective eating strategies to enhance athletic performance including before, during, and after activity
  • Coordinate nutrition plans aimed at maximizing performance based on specific dietary goals
  • Maintain RD Credential
  • Provide individual and team nutrition education and counseling to enhance the performance of the student athlete year-round
  • All other duties assigned
  • Develop nutritional strategies essential to maximizing performance including enhancing and monitoring current nutrition resources and support, developing, and implementing policies and protocols that ensure compliance with NCAA and SEC rules and regulations
  • Assist team of dietitians in managing all aspects of performance nutrition program
  • Provide individual and team nutrition education and counseling to enhance the performance of student athletes year-round
  • Collaborate and develop education materials for all athletes including social media efforts
  • Other duties as assigned by the Football Dietitian

Supervisory Relationships :

  • Reports to Sports Dietitian

Education and Certification:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is necessary .
  • A Master’s degree is preferred .
  • RD certification is preferred.
  • RD Eligible required .

Experience and Skills:

  • 1 year of related collegiate sports nutrition experience is preferred.
  • Prior experience working with a Football program is preferred.
  • Ability to work a non-standard work week including early mornings, nights, weekends & holidays is necessary.
  • Must be organized, detail oriented, and must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while collaborating with athletics staff and student athletes.
