Description


General Statement of Duties


Provides nutritional education to Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program clients; does related work as required.


Distinguishing Features of the Class


This is skilled technical and administrative work involving educating WIC clients in dietary health and nutrition. The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the WIC Program Supervisor but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with Departmental employees and supervisors, clients and family, health care professionals and the general public.


Duties/Responsibilities


Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)


  • Implements, coordinates and integrates WIC nutritional services with other health care and community agency programs;
  • Promotes and supports breast feeding;
  • Provides nutritional education to all WIC clients;
  • Designs and provides Health Department staff training in nutrition;
  • Refers high risk clients to appropriate agencies or health care professionals;
  • Documents client visits and completes all related medical records including assessment and care plans;
  • Performs related work as required
  • Prescribes and tailors food packages to client category and nutritional needs;
  • Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested and authorized;
  • Maintains current dietary and nutritional research findings, incorporating them into the WIC program services;
  • Operates centrifuge, draws blood for iron levels and reads iron levels;


Qualifications


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Good knowledge of the needs and problems of low income families;
  • Ability to use logical thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and oral instructions;
  • Ability to communicate well with departmental employees, health care professionals, patients, health care agencies and the general public, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with clients, health care professionals, health care agencies, departmental employees and the general public;
  • Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information;
  • Good knowledge of counseling and teaching techniques;
  • Ability to drive in all types of weather and road conditions;
  • Thorough knowledge of the functions and programs of community and other health and social service agencies and their available public health resources;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of technical and administrative tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines and emergency situations;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard word processing, spreadsheet and database applications appropriate to assigned duties;
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality;
  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Thorough knowledge of dietary health and nutritional education principles and practices;
  • Skill in interpersonal communications and persuasion;
  • Ability to prepare accurate and reliable reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations;


Acceptable Experience and Training


  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Considerable experience in clinical or community dietetics; or
  • Graduation from a college or university of recognized standing with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition supplemented by a minimum one year ADA approved internship or Master’s Degree; and


Required Special Qualifications


  • Possession of a license as a Registered Dietitian in the State of Montana;
  • Certified as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration;
  • Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance. See below.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Montana.
