From bones to brains, our cutting-edge hospital heals even the most serious of injuries, specializing in everything from total joint replacement to spinal cord injuries and neurological condition. In total, our 141-bed facility welcomes over 3,000 patients every year. As the state’s largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation services, we offer some of the most advanced therapies for stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic and sports injury, among many others.

General Summary

Under general supervision, performs admitting, financial counseling and related administrative activities for admissions. Assists the department of management in assuring the effectiveness and efficiency of the admissions process while maintaining consistent and accurate communication with Medical System staff, referring physicians and patients.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

Schedules patients for pre-admission evaluations. Accepts and enters referrals into database. Provides pre-admission and financial counseling, as needed.

  • Audits paperwork and files on each admission to assure accuracy and completion of information obtained and paperwork completed. Enters necessary corrections on admission information in computer system.
  • Investigates and responds to patient inquiries and complaints regarding insurance coverage, payment plans and other financial issues.
  • Provides patients, family members and referral sources with information pertaining to rehabilitation programs, hospital policies and procedures, insurance requirements, appointment times and patient locations.
  • Processes patient discharges and transfers by completing appropriate paperwork and entering information into computer system.
  • Maintains an up-to-date census list by coordinating patient admission, discharge and transfer activity with Nursing staff, as appropriate for assigned area.
  • Inputs and updates all pertinent demographic and financial data.
  • Performs referral activities for patients including pre-registering patients during intake process. Contacts referral sources to obtain demographic and insurance data.
  • Verifies patients’ insurance benefits and compensation coverage to determine necessity for advance deposits. Arranges installment payment plans for patients who are personally paying for services in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

Qualifications


Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Three years administrative experience in health care preferably performing referral, admissions or registration activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently; ability to respond effectively under stress.
  • Demonstrates courtesy and open communications with patients and referral sources. Ability to observes and apply relevant hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Observes and promotes positive guest relations.
  • Knowledge of the operation of a personal computer and data entry for entry and retrieval of demographic and financial information. Ability to operate routine office equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen to patient information and translate it to written documentation. Ability to listen to patient complaints and resolve them using positive, proficient guest relations skills. Ability to use resourcefulness and problem-solving skills in appropriately resolving various patient pre-admission issues.
  • Highly effective communication skills are required to relate to multiple levels of clinical and administrative personnel and to advise patients and visitors about hospital policies and procedures. Effective written communication skills are also required in completing admission and other documents properly.

Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives

  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
