ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY

The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a not-for-profit service and research organization that operates in partnership with the New York City Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice. CJA is the City's main pretrial services agency, combining operations, pilot projects, and research under one roof. CJA utilizes procedural justice practices to provide pretrial services to over tens of thousands arrested annually in New York City. Information collected about these arrestees and subsequent case processing is maintained in the agency's internal and externally shared database systems, which are used to conduct descriptive and evaluation research on arrestee characteristics, case processing and court outcomes, and on issues and potential reforms to criminal justice policy in New York City. CJA's programs operate in the criminal courts and detention facilities 24 hours a day seven days a week within the 5 boroughs of NYC, employing over 250 employees, citywide.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

CJA's Research and Evidence-Based Practice Department (R-EBP) serves the agency's mission by disseminating information about the Agency's activities, arrests, and criminal court outcomes in New York City. R-EBP also spearheads client-focused programming and new initiatives. The Department issues reports about CJA operations, conducts studies on criminal justice policies and practices, develops assessment instruments to make release recommendations to the court, and evaluates CJA programs. R-EBP engages in empirical research and facilitates interventions for individuals who are impacted by the criminal legal system.

  • Community Connections: A grant-funded initiative aimed at providing voluntary support for people released pretrial through referrals to community resources for unmet needs, such as employment, food, mental health, housing, in addition to others. Project tasks may include data cleaning and quality control, attending team meetings, producing reports, and assisting in project management duties.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned tasks with minimal supervision
  • Familiarity using Excel or other statistical programs, such as SPSS, for research purposes
  • Excellent oral and communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey information, collaborate with team members, and engage with stakeholders
  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a bachelor's degree in statistics, sociology, criminology, criminal justice, law, public policy, social work, or other social science; or at least one year of work experience in criminal or social justice organizations
  • Strong time management and ability to work with overlapping deadlines
