R&D Manager, Sensory

Who We Are

The R&D Manager, Sensory works as part of Peet’s Coffee, Innovation, R&D and Quality teams in the areas of product development, sensory, technical testing. The R&D Manager, Sensory leads product developments; conducts research; recommends, executes, and interprets sensory tests; and reports findings. This is a 6 month full time independent contractor assignment.

What You Will Do

• Provide R&D technical and sensory expertise for internal and external (commercial) customers.
• Research and identify specific sensory and consumer research solutions for Innovation and R&D teams and other business partners as needed.
• Execute timely, cost-effective sensory research to support new product development, cost savings/business continuity, and brand marketing initiatives.
• Develop and maintain sensory go/no-go action standards for Peet’s Innovation and R&D teams.
• Develop internal sensory panels as needed to support key projects.
• Conduct research in the areas of product development and sensory science.
• Provide sensory consultations, tastings and calibrations with internal teams and external customer/suppliers.
• Interpret and communicate findings concisely to drive timely business decision making.
• Collect, document, and summarize research, testing, and product development progress and information. Communicate findings and recommendations concisely and timely.
• Communicate effectively with vendors and outside agencies.
• Lead test sample production, manufacturing trials and scale ups at pilot plants or production facilities
• Evaluate, develop, and implement new sensory design of experiments to address specific sensory / consumer needs.
• Lead technical R&D projects as needed. Manage product development works with suppliers and/or external resources.

Who You Are

• Knowledge of statistics as it relates to sensory science.
• Familiar with major food safety requirements and concepts
• Excellent sensory skills required.
• Some familiarity with commercial coffee equipment preferred.
• Compensation range $43 - $55 hourly
• Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills to effectively collaborate with and influence internal and external teams.
• Computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, and ability to master other software. (e.g. Genesis, FoodLogiQ)
• 5+ years of food R&D Sensory Experience, preferably in beverage and RTD categories.
• Bachelor or master’s degree in food science or sensory science or relevant training.
• Excellent organizational and problem–solving skills, attention to detail and able to handle multiple priorities at the same time.
• Strong coffee, tea, and culinary knowledge preferred.

Peet’s Home Office is a Hybrid worksite, which requires any Home Office employees to work onsite (Emeryville, CA) 3 days per week.
