The Department of Radiology is a 24-hour, seven day a week operation providing Imaging Services for adult and pediatric inpatients and outpatients. This position will provide quality patient care before, during and after radiologic examinations in various locations including but not limited to the Main Hospital, Ambulatory Care Center and/or satellite facilities as necessary.

Responsibilities
The Radiology Assistant I play a key role in providing support for the technologists, ensuring patients have received the proper exam prep, are transported to and from Radiology in comfort with proper medical support, and are observed while on the exam table. This position will assist the technologists with data entry using various computer systems as well as help with maintaining equipment. Incumbent will answer phone lines in respective work area and patient care area. The Radiology Assistant will facilitate patient transport services and provide other support as needed. The incumbent works independently, and work is referred to the supervisor when standard procedures or processes do not apply. The individual must perform calmly in stressful situations and interact with radiologists, clinicians, technologists, and peers in a cooperative, harmonious manner for maximum effectiveness.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to maintain work effectiveness when faced with deadlines, changing priorities, fast-paced work environment, and conflicting demands from a variety of sources.
- Ability and knowledge to ensure safety of patient, before, during and after transport.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the use of proper body mechanics when lifting and transporting patients and moving radiology equipment.
- Knowledge of standard keyboard, ability to input/retrieve data accurately. Required to accurately enter and retrieve patient data from the Hospital Information System (IS) and Radiology Information System (RIS) to include but not limited to patient demographic and exam information, verification, status, change and amendment.
- Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for clinic’s/department’s customers; to demonstrate an interested, understanding, compassionate manner; to maintain a courteous and calm demeanor; and to use a proactive approach to negotiate with and persuade others to take required action.
- Should have a basic understanding of medical terminology or work in related field.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical personnel, co-workers, and other departments. Ability to function effectively as part of a team.
- Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English.

- Good general understanding of basic Radiology procedures and knowledge of Radiology equipment, supplies and drugs.
- Must be able to work quickly, accurately under pressure. Must be able to work/communicate with co-workers at all levels under very stressful conditions.
- Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to act, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS CPR or UCDH-issued CPR Certification
- Complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.
- Ability to transport patients within a hospital setting.
- Ability to present a professional image and maintain composure when dealing with the public and staff using reason and logic.
- Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem; identify the resources available to help solve the problem; create and implement viable solutions and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
- Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment always exists.
- Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with challenging customers who may be ill, angry, or emotionally distressed.
- Ability to act diplomatically and exhibit a courteous manner to patients and medical staff, and university personnel at all levels while performing work duties.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience performing related tasks preferred.
- Experience transporting patients within a hospital setting.
Special Requirements
- Must comply with annual TB test and CPR per Joint Commission regulations.
- Excellent attendance and punctuality required.
- Ability to move, manipulate and transfer patients weighing up to 400 pounds on/to/from exam table, with assistance as needed.
- If applicable, incumbent must be always Zone III and Zone IV safe while working in the MR Suite.
- The University of California has implemented a SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination Policy (ucop.edu) covering all employees. To be compliant with the policy, employees must submit proof of vaccination or a University-approved exception or deferral.
- No eating allowed in work area. Must keep work area clean and free of debris.
- Must be available for evening, weekend, and holiday coverage per departmental staffing guidelines.
- Ability to move from location to location throughout the hospital and other campus (satellite) locations.
- This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
- Ability to work safely in an area with ionizing radiation and/or high magnetic field.
- Ability to work in a very cool environment (computer area).
- Must adhere and support the tobacco-free environment.
- Ability to move supply boxes and equipment up to 45 pounds.
- Must adhere to all policies and procedures:
- Ability to move and manipulate equipment with knobs and switches.
- Must be able to work variable hours, alternate shifts, and occasional overtime to provide coverage as needed for sick leave, staffing shortages, etc.
