The San Mateo Medical Center is seeking qualified Radiology Assistant – Extra Help. Radiology Assistants perform a variety of basic and routine patient support care duties to Radiology and Imaging. Under of the lead of a Lead Radiologic Technologists, they provide direct patient care in safe transport of patients within the San Mateo Medical Center, preparation of patients for Imaging procedures, and ordering departmental supplies related to Imaging.
There is one Extra Help Vacancy, Varied Shift coverage which includes, evenings/weekends and holidays. The schedule may change depending on departmental needs.
The ideal candidate will possess a Basic Life Support and First Aid Certification as it is preferred.
NOTE: For Extra Help positions - Extra-help positions are short-term employment for up to 1040 hours which is equivalent to about six months; however, employment might end sooner depending on the needs of the hiring departments. Extra-help assignments are at-will and the employee is paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra-help workers are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the extra-help assignment.
NOTE: The eligible list generated from this recruitment will be used for extra-help hire only.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Escort Imaging patients to dressing areas and to patient exam rooms.
- Assemble patient case files including film jackets, worksheets, films and QC monitors.
- Transport specimens, medical records and related items.
- Safely transport patients to and from other patient units such as the Emergency Room, Out Patient Clinics or In-patient units.
- Perform film file room tasks including film filing, pulling jackets as requested, purging.
- Lift heavy items such as supplies and equipment.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Assist technologists in equipment measurements, lead apron checks, and darkroom maintenance.
- Observe and practice proper isolation techniques.
- Enter and retrieve a variety of information in computer systems.
- Lift and assist patients onto imaging tables.
- Develop X-ray film, maintain film inventory.
- Maintain records of patient procedures and unit activity.
- Prepare patient history or other questionnaires for Imaging procedures.
- Assist radiologists with film hanging, case presentations, Quality Improvement monitoring.
Knowledge of:
- Infection control.
- Basic diagnostic imaging procedures and principles.
- Basic principles, techniques and procedures in delivering safe patient care within scope of duties including:
- Safe lifting techniques.
- Total body substance isolation.
- Patients' rights including HIPPA regulations and elder abuse reporting requirements.
- Work with patients with multiple diagnoses.
- Work with a culturally, socio-economically diverse patient population of varying ages.
- Lift and transport patients and heavy items such as supplies and equipment.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Observe and record patient conditions, histories, procedure information.
- Develop and maintain empathetic attitudes toward patients.
- Provide assistance in delivering patient care in a medical setting such as patient escort, interviews, scheduling, Imaging procedures.
- Perform a variety of routine tasks and activities.
- Learn hospital techniques and procedures.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
Option 1 – Currently enrolled in a medical training program such as a nursing, Radiologic Technologist, Respiratory Therapy, Laboratory Technologist or other similar program.
Option 2 - Outpatient care: One year of experience in a hospital or doctor’s office as a nurse's assistant, hospital attendant or medical assistant.
Option 3 - Acute or long term care: One year of experience in a hospital, institution or approved nursing home as a nurse's assistant, orderly, ward aide or hospital attendant.
