Job Description
  • Has immediate eligibility for Maryland State Department of Education Pupil Personnel Worker certificate.
  • Provide direct assistance and referrals for students and families experiencing homelessness and other crisis situations.
  • Demonstrate a courteous and professional demeanor to all stakeholders of WCPS.
  • Has three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience or school counseling experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently and effectively complete work assignments and projects timely.
  • Utilize school and community resources, student conferencing, and home visitations to improve student attendance, increase the understanding of the student's home environment, and to facilitate effective and regular communication with parents/guardians.
  • Investigate complaints from students, parents, school staff, and community personnel and work towards resolution as problems are identified.
  • Required periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer and other office equipment.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Serve as a leader and primary resource person on the Student Support Team at assigned schools to address issues and create plans for youth in need of services.
  • Has the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Assist in the placement of students returning from juvenile adjudicated placement facilities as well as those needing special programs (Antietam Academy, Home and Hospital Teaching, Washington County Technical High School, Evening High School, etc.).
  • Has at least three (3) years of successful school-based administrative experience.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Has commitment to the Master Plan of the Washington County Public Schools in Washington County and a commitment to its achievement.
  • Assist students and families in obtaining clothing, eye care, dental care, and other necessities.
  • Provide group and individual counseling services for "at-risk" students and families.
  • Collaborate with the Office of the State's Attorney to pursue court action, as appropriate, to ensure compliance with Maryland Compulsory attendance laws.
  • Work with students at risk of dropping out of school and provide leadership and support for drop-out prevention efforts.
  • Investigate and make written recommendations for out-of-district/special permission requests.
  • Ability to travel district-wide regularly and state-wide occasionally.
  • Provide consultation services to administrative staff, parents, teachers, student intervention specialists, and other school staff regarding student enrollment, attendance, residency, custody, homelessness, and other student services areas.
  • Ability to sufficiently and efficiently move throughout school buildings for extended periods.
  • Assist IEP teams for students with special education needs when requested.
  • Act as the direct liaison between Washington County Public Schools and community agencies (i.e. Juvenile Court, Department of Social Services, Department of Juvenile Services, etc.).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Prepare reports and contribute to written informational materials and other special projects, grants, etc.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with students, other staff, and parents as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, and hear.
  • Has demonstrated leadership or administrative experience.
  • Possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Has demonstrated the ability to work with various problems in human relationships.
  • Investigate and make written recommendations on disciplinary situations, especially those involving a request for extended suspension/expulsion/alternative placement.
  • Direct experience with Microsoft Office and Google applications.
  • Ability to work prolonged and irregular hours.
