The Safety Inspector is responsible for departmental safety inspections, investigations and training associated with maintaining the well-being of all Metro Water Services (MWS) employees. The Department provides water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and reclamation, stormwater management and solid waste collection services for our customers. This position will work within the Safety Office to ensure all activities meet TOSHA regulations and other applicable laws, regulations and rules applied in a construction and industrial setting.
Metro Water Services’ employees are engaged 24 hours a day, each day of the year, for everyone who lives, works, or plays in Nashville. Serving over 220,000 customers across the region, our 1,100 employees continue to make MWS a leading utility. To meet these needs, this position must be available after hours to respond to emergencies as necessary.
- Assists in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations by maintaining safety records and employee safety certification records.
- Conducts inspections of facilities to identify potential hazards and suggests corrective action.
- Conducts investigations of accident scenes involving MWS vehicles and employees.
- Maintains a log or database of employee safety training compliance.
- May consult with Metro Legal Department concerning insurance claims.
- Develops and implement safety training programs including but not limited to confined space entry, flaggers, trench/shoring safety, lockout/tagout, etc.
- Conducts pre-employment field tests to determine equipment operator knowledge.
- Assists employees with Department ADA requests.
- May oversee Department Substance Abuse program.
- Observes MWS work sites, and documenting that employees are following departmental and Metro Government policies, procedures, and rules.
- Reviews data to report, benchmark, and trend safety data.
- Assists in development of individualized safety training plans based on employee work assignments.
Associates Degree from an accredited college or university with two years of industrial/occupational safety experience (not defined as Security/Law Enforcement experience).
Additional experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid Driver License
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A
- Extensive knowledge of Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)) and Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Act (TOSHA)
- Current certifications in Work Zone Traffic Control, Excavation Safety, and/or Confined Space Entry.
- Experience in managing worker's compensation/injury-on-duty (IOD) programs
- Current certification in First Aid, CPR
- Certification in related safety programs such as OSHA 30-hour, Certified Safety Professional
