Job Description

Job Title: Public Health Analyst

Reports to: Program Manager

Location: Hybrid virtual / in-person (residents based near Pittsburgh, PA or New Haven, CT preferred)

Job Type: Full-time, non-exempt

Organization Description:

The Environmental Health Project (EHP) is a public health nonprofit organization that provides wide-ranging support to communities impacted by oil and gas development. The organization opened in 2012 and has become a national leader in the comprehensive understanding of, and response to, the public health consequences of these extractive industries. EHP’s team includes a varied and skilled group of scientists, community educators, analysts, health professionals, and communications experts. The strength of the organization lies, in part, in its direct contact with community members, learning about their circumstances and responding to their need for relevant information and guidance. We seek to support communities more broadly in understanding the exposures and risks generated by oil and gas development and to inform advocacy dialogues at the local, state, and national levels regarding the public health implications of oil and gas activities. That support includes environmental monitoring, health impact assessments, public health guidance, and data and research interpretation.

Job Summary:

Public Health is core to EHP’s mission, and providing the most current public health information is critical to our various stakeholders, from frontline residents to policymakers. As EHP develops innovative methods of outreach and education, the Public Health Analyst supports those efforts through various forms of research (including review of health journals and public health datasets), collaboration with local networks, and public-facing presentation of relevant information. The Public Health Analyst serves as EHP’s principal resource on health-related initiatives and in communications with other public health organizations; ensures that the EHP team and our partners understand the implications of new research studies and health information as they become available; and works collaboratively with cross-functional teams to make certain that EHP’s approaches to education, advocacy, data analysis, and reporting are all in alignment with current health research.

Various tasks associated with this role include but are not limited to the following:

Primary Duties

• Serve as primary point of contact and EHP’s representative on health-related matters with government agencies and health-related coalitions

• Maintain research library of new papers, journals, and other research being published on oil and gas development and health

• Synthesize scientific literature into clear and cohesive educational materials, such as literature reviews

• Educate team on pertinent research that informs EHP’s priorities and programmatic approaches

• Support creation of “Health Impact Assessments” for communities in proximity to various types of oil and gas development

• Collaborate within the Programs Team to effectively incorporate health information and appropriate guidance into reports and interactive tools for stakeholder support

• Support place-based efforts with health expertise as EHP develops new ways of understanding and communicating the health impacts of oil and gas development

• Support the Communications Team to ensure the effective incorporation of health research into educational initiatives for various stakeholder groups

Other Duties

• Regularly assess EHP’s educational resources and reference materials; update content as needed

• Perform outreach to health professionals and expand EHP’s referral network; develop and maintain relationships with relevant content experts

• Support public health-related educational events as a speaker or moderator or by recruiting participants

• Field general questions from residents with health concerns, referring individuals to health care providers or other resources, as needed

Core Attributes Required:

• Ability to thrive in a dynamic, deadline-oriented environment with demonstrated ability to establish priorities and balance multiple, competing demands

• Excellent oral and written communication skills to diverse audiences on a range of technical issues

• Extraordinary attention to detail

• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills

• A ”roll up your sleeves” attitude and willingness to take initiative to address issues proactively

• Ability to strategize with fellow team members, with a focus on research and translation of findings

• High comfort level in communicating and coordinating with remote teams

• Passion for the organization’s mission to defend public health in the face of oil and gas development

Education and Experience Required:

• Master’s degree in Public Health required

• Coursework or three years professional experience in toxicology, community engagement, environmental science, or environmental health policy a plus

• Health Education Specialist (CHES) or similar certification a plus

• Background in nursing or other medical care a plus

• Experience implementing Health Impact Assessments a plus

• Proficiency in virtual meeting tools, including hardware and software

Salary: Commensurate based on experience
